Slight, pleasant and entertaining essays -- like the B side of Love is a Mix Tape. I liked the one about being an ice cream man the best, followed by the one about NKOTB.

Fantastic!

I love Rob Sheffield and enjoyed this quite a bit. This was definitely lighter than his previous memoir, Love Is a Mix Tape. My only wish was that it was a an audio book; I kept hearing Sheffield's voice in my head and knew the jokes would be even funnier with his deadpan delivery.

Love reliving 80s music!

A very deep trip back through the eighties, through pop music, this was a fun quick read. So far it's cost me about an additional $30 on iTunes reading this...
Sentimental and sweet, definitely a 3 1/2 star read.

Fun, quick read for 80s music fans.

Sheffield has a sweet and conversational tone in this book where he discusses how certain bands and songs have influenced him in life. It wasn't as humorous as something like High Fidelity, or even other music related fiction or biographies I've read in the past. It's a quick read and chuckleworthy!
funny informative lighthearted fast-paced

Started off as an incredibly enjoyable look at how 80s pop culture continues to influence all our lives, but quickly faded into a fun but not as enjoyable 80s-centered memoir.

Okay, so while the one-liners were great, and the overall essence of the book was good, and fun and clean, much like the 80s and 90s themselves, I got the impression all the way through like I was missing something. Many of the song titles rang some sort of familiar note near the back of my brain, but. By and large, I had a hard time placing most of them.

I have a feeling that would not be the case for the vast majority of my generation, most of whom would likely catch more of the subtext. To me, it came across as a sweet but somewhat disjointed reminiscence of pre-adolscence through young adulthood in the company of some really cool sisters. Who, coincidentally enough, also often seemed to know more about the popular culture of the time than the narrator.

Overall, just plain fun. But probably more fun for the less clueless.
