My thoughts:
Humanity has conquered old age, disease, car accidents, and death by tragedy. With nothing to limit the human population, scythes are in charge of dealing death out. Each scythe has a yearly quota and each scythe has a different moral code on how they determine who is chosen to die.

Ok I did think this book was very interesting. I was immediately hooked and intrigued in the plot initially. It’s hard to rate and review for me because it felt like almost every scene was involving scythes showing up to deal out death to varying individuals. Seeing the way people reacted to being selected for gleaning was depressing to me. It was sad and almost disturbing in some of the situations / type of gleanings that were selected.

There was an underlying plot throughout and that’s what would keep me reading the series. So while I thought this book was done well, the continual scenes of gleanings felt draining to me personally and I won’t be immediately diving into book 2 yet.

This is the first book by Neal Shusterman I've read, and I'm thrilled to say it will not be the last!

Scythe takes on a truly paradoxical question in the first of the Scythe series: If humans no longer died of natural mortality, would we still try to kill each other? He approaches what existence would look like in a post-mortal world. Making each question of morality more though-provoking than the last.

With a broad spectrum of characters, all grey in their own ways, I was pleased with most of them. Even the big bad I found believable and terrifyingly true to nature. Each with an agenda that feels out of reach by the giants in the scythedom. Yet, when we're given a glimpse into the truth, they feel far more human than we were initially led to believe. Neal has a way of telling the story in a way that is simply read, but so complex and leagues deeper the further you read.

All this to say, I would gladly live under the protection of the Thunder Head.
