This was a most enjoyable way to unwind from a few very hectic weeks of travel and work that have drained me of all my energy.

I really enjoy the historical setting. I have no idea how accurate it is, but it feels well done. I like the nuances in the minor characters. They are not just background filler, but provide a good foundation for the tone of the village and the village's main characters. All the atmosphere transports me to another time and place, which I quite enjoy. This is a crime/murder mystery that is more about the actions and thoughts of the living and not the gory too-minute details of the crime. Also to my liking.

The story was a bit slow-paced, but hey, we are in the 12th century. I think slow is OK. I definitely liked this book and look forward to number 2 in the series. Thanks to my library, it's already here lying on the shelf ready to be read. :)

This is very cozy and charming. The characters are so reasonable and well adjusted it is more fantasy than historical fiction! Highly recommend if you're looking to spend time with competent people doing the right things because they're right.

Recently bought a bunch of Brother Cadfael books at a thrift store for such a small amount of money I figured they were worth the gamble. (I may have read one in the past, before I started tracking my reading with a reading journal / Goodreads account, but I'm not sure.) Anyway, the stack of books I bought didn't include the first book so I got this one from my library on my Kindle.

And it's good! Brother Cadfael is an interesting main character with wry and / or pointed observations of his fellow humans. The setting / time period is intriguing and, while I don't know if the books I bought will have a long-term spot in my home library, I don't regret buying them. So that's good.

Also, I visited Wales a few years ago. It's a beautiful place but I definitely could have used Peters' handy pronounciation guide while I was there.

I was about halfway and could absolutely not

A bit of a slow starter, this first of Peter's Cadfael tales nonetheless does not disappoint.

легке, потішне, з купою середньовічних трупів і з цілим бенедиктинським абатством, монахи в якому наділені хоч одновимірними, але таки характерами. чудесне чтиво на довгі хворільні дні.
