A simple, easy read. Evocative and flows nicely, but a little bit of a just so story.

What a lovely little book! I remembered the PBS series from my childhood and wanted to try out the books, and am glad I did. The story pacing in this is slow, but the world and the characters and writing are so rich that it still goes quickly. It was a cozy read, with beautiful language and prose from the author. The mystery itself was interesting and human. Will definitely be looking at more from the series in the future.

Is it weird that during Ramadan I gravitated towards a mystery featuring corrupt clergy and fake miracles? It's weird.
But a pretty standard mystery that takes place in medieval England with an MC who has really great potential for a seriously cool character arc. I'd pick this series up again, though the sentence structure is sometimes very, very tedious.

Ellis Peters has a lyrical way of writing that is so enjoyable to read. Her murders are interesting, and the subtle humor she adds is lovely. It's not a typical easy read, but I highly recommend it to everyone. It won't BE for everyone, but I think many people would be surprised how much they enjoy her work.
The TV show, Cadfael, inspired by these books is a favorite comfort watch of mine. I finally decided to read the source material and I'm happy to report it did not disappoint. I don't want to live in the real medieval world but I do kind of want to take a vacation to the world of Cadfael. Ellis Peters has such a way of bringing this world and it's people to life. His characters feel relatable to a modern reader without feeling a-historical, which is all I want from historical fiction. I can't wait to read the rest of the series

Having enjoyed a couple of other medieval murder mysteries recently, I thought I'd give this series another try. It was a favourite of my grandmother's,but I bounced off it on a previous attempt; I don't recall why. This time round, I loved it. It's well written and researched, and Cadfael is brilliantly drawn.
