A guilty pleasure that I’m sure Brother Cadfael would relish and embrace. As fun and quick a read as any Sherlock Holmes.
Very enjoyable historical fiction, with a nice murder mystery at its heart and some engaging characters.
I love this series. I’ve only made it to like the 12th one but they are so good! Clean and subtle humor(mostly at Cadfael’s full of themselves fellow priests expense. Which I do appreciate he doesn’t hold anything against them. Cadfael just wants to help people, even the ignorant ones).
I’m not a big fan of the title because it seems more ominous than the book really is.
Quality writing. Quality characters. Gives a lovely sense of the history and place. Makes me want to visit England. Cadfael would definitely be a character I’d love to chat and enjoy a cup of tea with.

This was an okay story, in the sense that I will not actively search for other books, but I do still have one other book in this serie which I'll read, but not right away.
I will take this book to the annual BC-meetup in Castricum.

I don’t plan on reading more in this series, but that was a great ending!
Cozy! Charming! Medieval! Welsh! Good sick lit if you find yourself down with ~the plague~ during the holiday season.
A cozy medieval mystery. Entertaining enough, but not thrilling by any means. I’ll probably come back to this series again for the next book, as I do really like Brother Cadfael, and the characters are very well written.

This was awesome. It was like someone distilled the vibes out of Robin Hood and Ranger's Apprentice, poured it into a 12th-century monastery, and then added a heaping helping of murder mystery. Brother Cadfael is great — a bit irreverent, perhaps, but what he lacks in piety he makes up in care for others. And the rest of the cast was excellent as well.
I will say that I guessed about half the mystery after about chapter 8 or so, but I think I was supposed to, so that's not a mark against the book. And I did not expect the end until right before it happened, so yeah. Well done.
Now to find the rest of the series . . . :D
