Ugh! Heartbreaking and I couldn't put it down. Julie Murphy is my hero and Carlie is a close second! My Battle team will love this story --
5 wonderful double chocolate chip cookies.
Cover Love: Yes! I love this cover. I love the colors, and the solitude of the girl. However it all works together to not be depressing.
Why I Wanted to Read This: I first heard about this in an #ewyagc chat I participate in on Twitter. There was a Penguin tweeter on there that was raving about this book. Soon after that I was contacted by the AUTHOR HERSELF to participate in the blog tour for this book.Needless to say I was thrilled to say yes.

A beautiful story that shows that life is not always easy, that sometimes it takes someone else to show you your own strength, and that love comes in unexpected ways.
As we watch Carley learn and grown and heal in the home the Murphy's, we see her own walls start to come down, at least a little. We watch her find her own strength, and learn that showing the softer sides is not a weakness.
Beautifully written for the middle school reader, along with their parents/adults. Opens up many lines of discussion for this age group as they learn to become their own person.

This book was recommended by a teacher with whom I work. She told me it was like a lot of the students we work with and that I would most like cry at the end. She was right about both.
This is such a fantastic book. Carly is a middle-school girl who ends up in foster care with the Murphys, a middle class family with three boys. She doesn't believe in the "perfect" family that she sees, and she strives to cause contention in order to protect her and prove that her world view is the true one. Slowly but surely, the family gets her to drop her guard, and she starts to feel things she hasn't felt before in her life.
It was touching. It was informative. It was heart-wrenching. It was a phenomenal book that I can't recommend enough.

This is a really great story. The writing is simple and suitable for anyone 4+. The subject matter is pretty intense and it's the most realistic look at a positive foster care situation I've ever seen in a novel. The book is mildly funny and heart-warming at times but mostly it's incredibly sad. Reading it from the prospective of someone who works everyday caring for other people's children, I found the helplessness of everyone very sad and I was basically balling my eyes out at the end. But I'm really glad to have read it.
Rec 6+ realistic fiction, troubled homes, students who need some push to go to college/make change.

Carley Connors is placed into a foster home with the Murphy family after she and her m0ther are injured by her step-father. At first, Carley hates her foster home; but she eventually grows to love every member of the Murphy family. They help her gain confidence that she uses to re-connect with her mother.
Some of the dialogue felt a bit like an out-of-touch adult writing for a young adult. But it was very moving.

A gutsy, beautiful and heart-wrenching story filled with intricate relationships and truly memorable characters. This one is a thought-provoking upper MG for sure.
One of my all time favorite books. Such a touching story about a girl going into foster care.
