El Deafo is the memoir of a girl who became deaf at age 4 after an illness. It begins the day she became ill, covers the confusion and realization around the deafness, and ends when she is in 5th or 6th grade. Although the writing is somewhat simple in a graphic novel format, the book conveys a nuanced, honest portrayal of what it is like to be "different" as well as what it is like to just be a kid. Cece, the main character, does not feel sorry for herself; she just wants to fit in and be able to hear. There are many hilarious situations, and many poignant ones as well. All children will find something to relate to in the book, and, I hope, become more empathic when interacting with people who are different from themselves. Good for ages 10 and up.

It was okay. Pretty cute, but not a whole lot going on. I was a little underwhelmed.

Interesting to see a perspective I haven't seen before. Lots to think on, highly recommended for all ages despite being categorised as children's
