2.12.2024 - A fun easy read. Mostly about her internal struggle with being different. I laughed because the parents seem very nonchalant in this telling.
El Deafo is a really special story that does such a fantastic job tackling big topics and themes and weaving them into a narrative that’s captivating to all audiences, especially kids. While not all young people can understand what having a hearing impairment is like, there are so many other relatable moments surrounding friendship, school, and the general kid experience that shine through. It brought me back to trying to make friends and how daunting that can be! As we get older, we sometimes forget how hard it can be to be a young person. We get caught up in seeing their lives as easy and carefree and stories like this capture not only happy times, but some of the struggles that young people go through and the anxiety that it can cause them.
Cece Bell perfectly taps into her youth to deliver a deeply personal story but one that many people can still see themselves in in many ways. It’s absolutely wonderful.

Would be helpful for kids (and adults!) to learn about one person's experience with deafness. I'd learned quite a bit about deafness and Deaf culture before reading this book, but this memoir enlightened me to some experiences I'd never thought about. It's a great reminder that everyone's experiences, and the ways they feel about what they go through are unique.

I've been wanting to read this for so long, and at last, vindication! El Deafo is Bell's memoir of what it was like growing up deaf in the 70s, and simply growing up deaf. Her friendships were partly defined by it, the relationships she made were defined by it, and going through school was sometimes a struggle.
Her memoir is incredibly accessible to younger audiences, thanks to her portrayal of everyone as rabbits, as well as its graphic novel format. She dissects some problematic attitudes people have towards deaf and hard of hearing folks, as well as her more personal struggles. This memoir focuses on her creating her superhero persona as well as finding a "true" friend, ie, a friend that doesn't make things weird.
It's truly no wonder why this book is so popular. It spreads awareness and a narrative not often (to my knowledge) shared. This was a really great book, and I definitely recommend it to those who want something a little different to read, and for those who love graphic novels and memoirs.
Review cross-listed here!

I think this was a really cute way to make an autobiography with people as bunnies, but of course, it was made for children and reads that way. Not a critique, but more personal taste.
