I enjoyed this graphic novel. It was funny and engaging. I did feel like the panels were a bit busy so it was hard to focus at times but overall I would definitely recommend.
Reminds me a little of Judy Blume, if Blume drew cartoons. I️ loved reading this with my 5 yo. There were parts that were over her head but still super enjoyable for both of us. It’s a story of identity, resilience, friendship, and confidence. I’d recommend it to readers of any age
Such a sweet story of Cece Bell living after hearing loss—trying to fit in and relate to her friends as any elementary schooler wants to. Telling her story as a graphic novel was very effective and I loved the artwork. Especially liked how Cece would imagine herself as El Deafo and had perfect things to say in her head with the courage of her alter ego, things that were left unsaid. She slowly develops true friendships with people who love her for who she is. Read this with my almost eight year old daughter. I think any 2nd-5th grader would enjoy this book and relate to the story and be inspired by it.
El Deafo is a memoir framed as a graphic novel, accessible to middle grade students and beyond. Cece shares what led to her near-complete hearing loss at age 4 and how she perceived the world and friendships after that adjustment.
In time, Cece learns to embrace how she is akin to a superhero instead of fixating on how this makes her different from her peers (initially, "different" meant "less than" to Cece). Readers will feel empathy as she struggles with familiar friendship questions and difficulties and take heart as she comes to recognize how this difference can be an asset.

I picked this book up at a slow day in the library, since I've been meaning to read it for the last year. It was adorable.

Based on the author's childhood, this adorable graphic novel captures the emotional journey of a young girl who feels insecure about being different and grows to embrace this difference as a superpower. A powerful and informative read for kids and adults alike!
This is a great book on explaining Deaf culture to kids and showing differences in the world! I love the cute characters this book offers and that it appeals to a wider audience with it graphic novel characteristics.
A very insightful and cute look into growing up deaf in the 70s.
