The story itself is good. It explains how hard things can be for Cece. She struggles with not only hearing but learning to read lips, refusing to learn sign language, loneliness, friendships, and school.

When I was in elementary school, I read this book at least 3 times! I loved it so much, and it was a perfect book to introduce me to the world of graphic novels.

Read this book in one sitting! I was reading it to see if it might be a good book to read with my students and absolutely loved it. I love how Cece depicts her friendships and internal struggles of being treated or seen differently. I loved seeing how she grows in those friendships and in her confidence.
What a great graphic novel about acceptance, inclusion and recognizing those with special needs and abilities.

Adorable. Loved seeing her life as a deaf person coming of age. It’s such a good reminder that being deaf is different for everyone and just being a kind friend is enough. I definitely learned a lot too. Such an amazing book for kids and adults.

I adored this book. I wish I could give a copy to all my kids’ friends— an excellent peak at what hearing loss looks and feels like for a child. My favorite part is that it’s just so real; no neat and tidy message. It can be inspirational, but mostly, it just makes the reader aware of what it might feel like if they too experienced hearing loss.

Continuing with my graphic novel kick, and fitting in with my #NonFictionNovember theme, a memoir I found on some list. Sarah Riley Stirman also read this and her review had me push it up on the list.
The story is of CeCe, who after an illness, loses her hearing. Her trials and tribulations trying to figure out how to navigate life after losing her hearing is sweet, heartbreaking, funny, and difficult. I remember a couple of teacher friends talking about wearing the type of microphone that CeCe has her teachers wear and forgetting they had it on and going to the bathroom.
I really enjoy this graphic novel, the illustrations were a lot of fun. This is one that would be on the classroom shelves immediately., go El Deafo! The book is reviewed for ages 8 and older, grades 3 and older. I read the author's note before I read the book, as it provided some perspective that was helpful as a reader before hand. 4⭐️
