I was lucky enough to see Michael Lewis and a few of the other contributors to this book at a lecture and it totally sold me on reading this! The federal government and the work that gets done through federal funding can so often feel like a mystery and I appreciated that this book explained some very niche areas of government work while almost making each piece feel like a human interest story as it focused on a particular person. It really brought to light how important even the most niche federal jobs are in maintaining our safety, protecting information and history, and improving the lives of Americans. I particularly enjoyed the essays: The Searchers, The Cyber Sleuth, The Rookie, and The Free Living Bureaucrat, but I do think I learned something new from every essay in this book. Some parts of the book can get dense, but overall an interesting, inspiring, and informative read!

I loved learning about these exceptional people, but would also loved to have had a chapter on just regular, boring bureaucrats who keep everything running across changing laws and administrations. The people who know how to get your birth certificate, who post agendas and minutes to keep records open, who know the laws and procedures by heart. Those are the people who save the higher ups every single day.

Really great untold stories regarding the good our public service members do for the country. Truly inspiring and a great book for fighting back against stereotypical views of the actual work that gets done. Some of the authors were better than others, but overall it was very engaging.
