I honestly don’t know how to rate this because for my brain, it gets confusing when it goes back and forth. The author does a great job by making it long chapters so you’re not bouncing back and forth sooo much. For the start to about 75%, I was enjoying and then I just got really bored and confused. The ending was lackluster. This wasn’t the best house of horrors I’ve read and that’s why it isn’t going above 3 but it’s still a family struggling to find answers.

A really interesting story about a family experiencing loss due to a family “curse” passed down to generations. Concealed in the Good House. It really that keeps you on your toes and is very unpredictable. The ending however I wasn’t a huge fan of it was disappointing. I really was hoping for it to go one way just following the plot and how it always went a way you didn’t expect but this REALLY went a way I didn’t expect and it was kinda underwhelming.

I wanted a Halloween read, so I picked The Good House. It had a strong premise complete with a historical perspective surrounding this old house and its extended family; however, overall, the story got repetitive and was longer than was it needed to be. 21 hours in audiobook. Much too long for the genre.
The most important parts to me were Corey, the teenage son’s story. This story was directly related to the spirits aspect of the story, so that was good, but even among Corey’s story, there were aspects of the tale that were retold several times over. Once was enough. It seems as if the author was attempting for a sprawling literary horror novel, but it didn’t quite get there. Not bad, but not great either.

I saw a booktoker that i followed seems to love this book so i decided to read it since there's a copy available on libby for this book
The Good House is about Angela Toussaint who goes back to her grandmother's house in a small town, where she tries to cope with the trauma of her son's suicide. But she soon finds out that the house is haunted by a powerful evil spirit that has a link to her grandmother's past and what really happened with her son.
The book has many strong points, such as the rich and detailed descriptions of the setting, the history, and the voodoo practices. The author creates a vivid and atmospheric mood that pulls the reader into the story. The characters are also well-developed and complex, especially Angela, who goes through a lot of emotional and spiritual growth throughout the novel.
But the book also has some weak points, such as the slow pace, the confusing timeline, and the lack of suspense. The book switches between different time periods and perspectives, which can be hard to follow and sometimes breaks the flow of the story. The book also takes a long time to build up the tension and the horror, which can make some parts boring and predictable. The ending, also feels a bit rushed and convenient.
One of the things that I dislike the most about the book was the romance between Myles and Angie. I felt that it was unnecessary and unrealistic. They had not seen each other for decades, and they suddenly rekindled their love in the middle of a crisis (like Myles literally have a gf, and he decided to throw his relationship the moment he saw Angela what a dick). I think that their relationship was not well-developed and did not add much to the story. (I would have preferred if they remained friends or if their romance was more subtle and gradual)
I enjoyed reading The Good House, but it was not a perfect book. It was a long and dense book that required some patience and attention. The book was not very scary (a bit boring also if i must say), but it was very disturbing and emotional.

I really wanted to like this book more because I’m fascinated my voodoo or hoodoo but this book just dragged on with unnecessary background information.
