I really wanted to like this book more because I’m fascinated my voodoo or hoodoo but this book just dragged on with unnecessary background information.
THIS BOOK was so scary. And beautiful. One of my favorite fiction books I've ever read, finally a book that really gave me nightmares. Due is such a wonderful storyteller and you just fall in love with her characters. I didn't sleep well while reading this, but in this case, that's a good thing.

This was a really great, really long book. The audiobook, narrated by Robin Miles, was FANTASTIC.
I loved the spooky atmosphere of the book and, even though I'd argue not a ton happens, the stuff that did happen was always shocking and caught me off-guard.
I really enjoyed the multiple timelines and getting to see how Corey got to the point of his suicide. (PS How did he not realize Becca was evil? Teenage boys are so dumb).
I saw some reviews not liking the ending, and calling it a "reset" button. But I truly hope they did get their happy ending. I want that miracle for the Toussaints. And I choose to believe it happened, as opposed to some "we're having this lovely thought but the Bakkha (sp?) won and we're trapped in a nightmare" thing you see sometimes lol

Sometimes when I’m listening to a compelling audio book, I get so swept away with the narrative that I need it to go faster, to know what happens, and I switch to the text version so that I can speed through the rest of it. I was tempted by that impulse at a number of points here, but I knew my internal voice would never be able to duplicate the flawless audio narration. A wonderful and richly layered horror novel that was a delight to listen to. My only criticism is of the ending, which I would have written differently.

A long book but I was engaged the whole time however I will say I don't remember the why. I read it but I don't think I fully understood what was being explained which is a me thing 100%! This is my second book of Tananarive Due and I think she does a great job of describing creepy/scary things. I could see myself reading more of her books
This book. Wow. What a voice Tananarive Due has.
Angela’s son commits suicide and after that, her whole world falls apart. Two years later she goes back to her old family house and starts to discover some dark forces and a generational family curse might be the reason for her son’s death.
This book at times was lengthy and long, in ways that somewhat reminded me of King’s ‘Salem’s Lot’ and other tales by him. It’s a slow build chocked full of family history, cultural history and importance.
Such an important book to read for so many reasons and I learned so much from a racial perspective that isn’t my own.
A horror book that truly feels terrifying in many ways.
