Finished it, at last! That took forever and a day. Was it worth it? Absolutely it was. Despite taking over 300 pages to get going, things finally ended in a Stephen King-sized parade of destruction. In short, a Shirley Jackson-level story wrapped in a James Michener-sized novel. Definitely worth sticking around for the ending, though.

This was the first book I have read by Tananarive Due and I was very impressed. I am a big Stephen King fan. Although I love the genre he works in, what sets him apart from others is his character development. Due shows the same gift for rich characters while still telling a truly compelling story. I will be reading more of her offerings.

This book was about twice as long as it should have been. I really liked the story idea and was excited to read it but it fell short of what I think it could have been. It held my interest so I gave it 3 stars.

This was honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read. The book is about what happens when you abuse magic, but from a black perspective. I was on the edge of my seat so many times and it was an emotional roller coaster. HIGHLY recommend.

Four stars? FIVE stars? I suspect that I won't know the answer for a few days. "Horror" or "supernatural suspense" isn't my favorite genre, although I read it occasionally. However, this book exceeded my expectations in several different areas: the creep factor, the combination of voodooand haunted-house, the African-American protagonist(s) and the diverse supporting cast of characters. Oh, it's loooong. And there are a couple places where flashbacks interrupt the narrative flow. but these are minor quibbles. Tananarive Due can WRITE, ya'll.
