Very well done, a great start to Jean’s story. The way his character is explored and challenged is beautifully done. The plot was minimal, but i appreciated the set up and getting to know the main characters a lot more than anticipated. Think this might become a comfort read.
4.5 ⭐️
each book is darker than the last.
jean is deeply broken
picks up after renee took him back from the ravens
what happened after january at raven court?
sapphic relationship and non binary player, poly relationship and indian/muslims
very different way of revealing things. neil and andrew traded secrets throughout the book whereas jean accidentally says truths
french man
piece together what happened to jean in january after neil left
more male SA rep
excited to see where jeremy and jeans relationship goes and what happened to jeremy’s familiarity
more insight into kevin

oh jean moreau how you have charmed me...
i really enjoyed the sunshine court, especially as a first installment/a continuation of all for the game !! in general, i think it picks up at a really good point and works as a really great expansion to the series. i could really tell that nora sakavic's writing style, skills, and craft had matured compared to the foxhole court, which i was incredibly pleased to see! as a first installment i think she did a great job of setting up different dynamics, character arcs, relationship plots, etc. that are going to be expanded on and explored further on in this trilogy while still calling back to the previous trilogy. i don't think it was too overwhelming, i think she blended the "past" and "future" of the series really nicely and i really enjoyed all the different callbacks to the first trilogy!
as a southern california native i absolutely adored the depiction of it! all the little quips about what it's like to live in la and the mentions of other towns and traveling time and the pch was also so fun, i really loved it!! and i found the depiction of usc as a whole really well done as well? i thought it was well-researched and well-depicted and it reminded me a lot of the times i actually went to visit there!! reading it was just super fun because i would see something mentioned and be like "omg i know that place!!! i go there!!!" and it just made for a fun reading experience ^^
when it comes to the characters, i found that this one was a lot more character focused that the original trilogy was, if that makes sense? i found the arcs, introspection, and overall characterization to be a lot more developed and pronounced here than in neil's trilogy. which isn't a diss (i loved neil's trilogy), i just found that the sunshine court seemed to center the plights of its characters more. that being said, nora's character work really shines in this book. the characters are all so rich and vibrant and feel really solidified. i, of course, enjoyed cat and laila. renee getting some expansion/a different perspective on her was really nice as well, i loved being able to see her in a different light and grew really attached to her!! i enjoyed the other trojans too, i'm excited to see more from them in the golden raven when i read it, and i thought the coaches were written SO well. of course, i enjoyed the inclusion of neil, my forever favorite, and kevin was lovely too!
i really enjoyed jeremy as a character. i thought he was really well-written and so, so kind. one of the first things i noted about him was his kindness and i love that it isn't treated as a finite source for him. his dedication to his friends and teammates and the people around him is so refreshing to see, but that being layered against his home life created a really interesting blend that i'm so curious to learn more about!! he had so many great moments and i really enjoyed reading his perspective. excited to see where nora takes him, how he progresses in his own arc, and how he progresses in relation to jean!
speaking of jean, he was obviously my standout of this book! he's such a tragic and sympathetic character, yet he has such a large capacity for care. he's funny, sarcastic, catty, and at times sardonic leading to genuinely some of the BEST moments in the book (including a dick joke i actually missed the first time around: "it's not about size anyway" / "defensive")! he's endured so much grief and hurt and hardship in his life and it's hard for me not to root for me. i loved his interactions with other people. his dynamic with jeremy was definitely the highlight of the book for me, i thought them falling in and out with each other, stepping and misstepping as they learn to interact with and sort of exist with each other was really done well and incredibly impactful. a lot of that was due to jean's arc being able him sort of "learning to be a person again" which i found was done really well and quite enjoyed! i also really enjoyed jean's friendship with cat and laila, his relationship with renee, and his respective dynamics with kevin and neil. everything about jean was captivating to me. i found his echoed refrain of "I am a Moreau, I am a Raven" really interesting, how he was constantly trying to reconcile himself in relation to his family and the ravens, i thought that part of his arc was really powerful. i'm really looking forward to seeing where his arc goes, how it continues, how he evolves and heals, and how he starts to find his place with the trojans.
overall, i really enjoyed the sunshine court! i'm definitely looking forward to reading the golden raven and continuing this story, i can't wait to see how these characters, relationships, and arcs all develop and evolve as the books continue :D

I’m not sure how to rate this one. It’s the strangest fish out of water story I’ve encountered. On the one hand, removing the life or death stakes and having a former raven confronted with the real world is interesting, but Jean never super interested me as a character in the original trilogy. His grief over his sister was incredibly poignant though dang. He’s growing on me. But I feel like with lower stakes, the awkward plotting is more keenly felt. I think I’ll know better how to rate this one once I see where the next book(s) go.
