First read 05/2024, reread 04/2025
The original trilogy was about a sports team where everyone had a Backstory, and yes, it was ridiculous, yes, it was over the top, yes, it was angsty as anything, but I loved it. It told the story and wrapped up. That was that.
And then the fans got it into their heads that two fairly minor characters would strike up a relationship after the events of the series, and wrote a shitload of fanfiction about it, and this became so prevalent that the author decided to write another trilogy about those two. The new books are padding out a story that's already been told, and it shows; the Trojans are so consistently nice that they simply don't have the friction that made the Foxes so interesting. The only real tension in the book has to do with the slow revealing of Jean's backstory, and in fleshing it out, it now has even more angst, to the point that it feels more than a little ridiculous.
But I don't care. It's so easy to get pulled in to this book, to stop thinking and just enjoy the ride. Great stuff.
