MASSIVE TRIGGER WARNING: mass shooting, queer hate crime

Probably some other trigger warnings too. Full confession I only made it 6% of the way into this book. But the first chapter literally depicts a shooting at a gay nightclub, very similar to the pulse nightclub shooting. The shooting in this book takes place after Pulse and that is all the information I have. I didn’t manage to make it any further.

I failed to read the reviews so this is partly my fault, but I am frustrated that the author didn’t think to include a warning in the synopsis.

Very good story

This is the first in the Heathen's Ink series. I enjoyed it.
I liked how this was not just a simple love story; it also dealt with PTSD in the wake of a traumatic event.
Interesting story, looking forward to the other books in the series.

Really enjoyed this first book in a series with an author that is new to me. I will definitely be moving on to the next book. The story was timely and interesting. The character development is a bit uneven and we learn a lot more about one MC than we do the other. There are also some plot lines floated that are never followed up on which is a loss as they had the potential to really increase the gravitas of the storyline. I am looking forward to following up on these characters in the subsequent books.

Bones of a good story but some niggly grammar error

This one had all the makings of a good story but I kept getting thrown out of it because of bad grammar editing and typos.

It's a shame because on paper the story narrative had lots of good elements to it, although I did raise a question about the setting of the incident which kicks it all off and whether it was too soon.

Still, there was only a little bit of angsty dramady and I didn't feel like this was too much of an insta love romance and the steam level was on the higher and hotter side.

That is not how PTSD works. That is not how anxiety works. The term is psych hold, not “psyche” hold. I was on board with this book until the point where trauma-based mental illness got fixed in an offensively rainbows and unicorns way. I don’t know the author’s background, but I do know mental illness, and the depiction of what it takes to “fix” the character is at the very best naive, and at worst could cause someone to feel like they are failing when it isn’t that way for them. The level of trauma written into this character isn’t something that could be fixed by a stress ball, pack of gum, a month of therapy, and a new apartment. That just isn’t how it works. I’m willing to suspend a fuck ton of disbelief for smut and fluff, but this was just too far.

No rating because I did not make it far enough to feel it fair to give one.

This was not for me. The errors in writing and plot along with the cheesy love bits were too distracting for me to overlook. And I can overlook a lot of badness in writing. I think of myself as a consummate skimmer: talented in the art of finding what I can like in a book and focusing solely on that. Despite my skills, I could not get through this one.

When I did a quick search for this [a: K.M. Neuhold|14204017|K.M. While it was in this same series, I did not read far enough into Rescue Me to see any similar characters. While I enjoyed [b: Unraveled (Heathens Ink #5)|38469564|Unraveled (Heathens Ink #5)|K.M. It would have saved me the time of getting several chapters in on this.

The other book I realized that I read by Neuhold, though it was a collaboration, was [b: Tank (Ballsy Boys #2)|39902299|Tank (Ballsy Boys, #2)|K.M. I'm left in a state of serious confusion here because I am having a serious book crush on Tank. Perhaps Neuhold has truly improved in time since writing Rescue Me to what is being done now. If so, I applaud the growth and development and offer my sincere thanks in putting out newer books that I truly enjoy.

So while I really do not care how Thane and Madden's story goes or how these Heathens Ink get their *#@1 together, I am desperately waiting to hear more about the Ballsy Boys.

Thane and Madden meet at the club bar with strobing lights and pounding music. It’s instant lust, instant attraction – the perfect first club meet. Until the gun shots start.

This is a story about love, but it’s also a story about overcoming and healing. Thane and Madden are both men who have dealt with their own pain and struggles – they are no strangers to adversity. But when a moment of fun turns into one of the most dangerous nights of their lives, old wounds are reopened and magnified by a new trauma.

What I really liked about this book is that although there is a lot of adversity and personal healing, the romance is still strong and thriving. Thane and Madden have a beautiful connection with each other and with their friends. They are well developed characters who grow and change, and despite all the pain, there is a lot of humor, joy, and snark. Plus there’s some super hot sex scenes which were wonderful. Overall, I really liked this book and I’m so happy I started this series.

I'm probably a bit late to the party but I finally started this series. I've been wanting to Royal's book for a long time and then I thought, fuck it, I'll start from the beginning! An what an amazing decision!

I loved Madden and Thane. I was in a sort of book slump but I just finished this book in one sitting. It's a great start to the series. I'm curious about a lot of people, especially Adam.

I liked how Thane and Madden had an actual conversation about how he moved out. I didn't like it 'cause it was so abrupt and I'm glad Thane confronted him. I really liked them together. The epilogue was so cute and the bonus short was even better.

On to Royal's book! I seriously cannot wait!!
