Wow, not what I expected at all. Beautiful, revolting, macabre, political, and often witty. Though I've read about life in the Roman Empire under Nero's misguided leadership many times, I didn't fully appreciate the destruction his masochistic personality inflicted on the Roman people, that is, until now. At the core of the book is a poetic love story between two very different people and all the misunderstandings that ensue. Though one might think they are destined to be star-crossed lovers, it turns out that another unlikely couple fulfills that role instead.

Incredible. I was intimidated by the size and thought this would be a hard read since it came out in the 1870s, but I was pleasantly surprised by the captivating narrative and relatable thought-life of characters, and I wasn’t overwhelmed by the descriptions of life in ancient Rome. Especially for Christians, I think this book offers beautiful context to early post-Jesus times that makes me appreciate ancestors of the faith and livens up how I read scripture. I also appreciate how the book so humanly portrays different people’s relationship with religion and faith.
