A fast paced, fun, easy read.

Coming to this book after seeing the movie first was an interesting experience. I thought the book was more enjoyable as it is better a better medium explore the psychological aspects of the time loop idea. By diving into the main character's head a much more detailed account of the bizarre experience compared to the movie. This a very unique idea that is for the most part executed very well. I'd recommend this to anyone who is interested in a sci-fi video game battle groundhog's day.

4.5 stars. Awesome story, although I was craving something longer, a little more in-depth. Looking forward to see how it's adapted for the movie.

The novel version of this story was just okay. Nothing egregious but also nothing standing out as great. Just kind of textbook mid. The pacing is pretty poor, typically very fast paced, but often takes its dead time on inconsequential things and then speed blitzes the interesting parts.
Example: we don’t get to see any of the training during the time loops, we just take his word for it that they happened. This would have been cool to see.

The ending sequence with keiji being declared as romantically obsessed with Rita after that not being mentioned for most of the loops was a bit strange, little build up in that regard. I felt his budding interest in her was better handled in both the movie and manga versions. In this one it almost seems like they go from complete strangers to him being obsessed with her, and it’s hand waived by him saying “I’ve actually been watching her closely this whole time”.
The final sequence was done a bit faster than I would have liked. I would have preferred maybe another chapter or two fleshing out the climax a little better
and better explaining the situation with the “Alpha” and the “servers” and why they are in the predicament they find themselves in at the end. It’s communicated ok, but it’s pretty messy

Overall I’d say this iteration of the story is quite significantly worse than both the manga and movie adaptations for me. But it’s nice to have consumed them all now to have the comprehensive experience lol.

Love this movie and also loved the book! Different in some big plot ways but equally interesting

Fairly good book. Makes we want to rewatch the movie.

The book is too short, even for a LN. I finished this within two hours.
Since this is a short read, you don't see any unnecessary deviations from the main plot like in other LNs so the plot keeps rolling without getting boring in any of the chapters. The characters are really likable in this book although they could have used a bit more screen/page time.

if you like the story then I recommend that you read the manga of this story and also watch the movie -Edge of tomorrow based on this story.

But If you are reading this after watching the movie- Edge of Tomorrow which is based on this book then you will find the plot and the ending to be different.
SpoilerI wish the book could have ended like the movie with both of the main characters surviving the war but the ending in the book does give it a dark flair.

This is one of those instances where the movie was better than the book. I'm not sure if it was the translation, but I found the writing to be quite mediocre. The book was full of sexism and poorly developed characters. While the concept was interesting and the ending was intriguing and shocking, there was little else that held my interest. This is the longest short book I have read in a while, and it took me a long time to finish because I just couldn't get into it.

I’m sure between this book and the 2014 movie, there’s a flawless story somewhere in this premise. But each one has their issues that holds itself back from being great. The movie (it’s been a while so forgive me if I’m misremembering) was shallow and didn’t expand on the premise in a meaningful way, it was prettier and definitely captured the idea of the loop in a more coherent way but there was a lot of detail missed there in the training and growth that Kiriya as a character undergoes.

Now for the book. The pacing feels way off. It slowly methodically builds you up to the looping mechanics, then at the apex of when you finally get to meet Rita on the battlefield for the big reveal, the story halts and repeats everything you just covered but from Rita’s perspective. We were just about to get into the action wtf!

Or later on almost at the end of the book they start going into the origins of Rita and how the Mimics came about. I’m like bro aren’t we wrapping this up in 30 pages? Idk. I would’ve preferred it if it was layered a bit more evenly throughout. Now to give some credit, it’s easy enough for me to criticize pacing in a book about time travel loops.

It also felt strange making this a sudden love story at the end. The entire book has been about the war against the mimics. Why are we all of a sudden pivoting to an out of nowhere fight to the death between the two mains. I want more focus on the literal alien army coming to wipe out the human race!

Overall it’s a fun quick read.

An enjoyable read which was let down by a lacklustre ending. Actully the book has two major failings. The first is the ending which is, and this is its greatest sin, predictable and oddly anti-climatic. The second, and this is true of the vast majority of stories involving time travel, is that the details of time travel are poorly explained. Still the pacing is excellent and keeps the story moving quite well. The majority of the story is a nice mix of Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers. So I'd definitely recommend it. Its just a pity it falls down in the final stretch.
