Upon seeing that that the movie was coming out, my husband and I went to look up the backstory and discovered the original Japanese novella (translated into English).

The introspection of the main character and the inherent loneliness of his situation does come through on the pages; I love the thoughts, his inner monologue, which is so difficult to translate to the silver screen. That being said, the movie was also great, but I highly recommend reading the short story first, for the cultural/geographic aspects that are missing from the film.

All in all a great read. I want more.

Fun! I listened to the audiobook of this. The author handles the characters well, especially the main character whose development occurred not over the course of days or months or years but over the course of a single day repeated over and over.

This review has mild spoilers for both the book and the movie edge of tomorrow which is based on this book.

I loved the movie however the book and the movie are different in some major ways and both really fun. After I made peace with excessive swearing and crude and cheap jokes I totally enjoyed plot and following the characters in this short story. I thought the book had some plot holes but it was difficult to put the book down to the end.
Movie Rita, although great could not hold a candle to the Book Rita who had become an elite fighter before discovering the reset and was doing everything she hated because she didn't want anyone else losing everything she had lost. The book had a different ending and much darker for humanity.

I read this book after finishing the manga and watching the movie. In whole, after having seen the same thing three times I have to say , each one was completely different. The manga was a great adaptation that combined most of the main story line so that the plot worked yet it was not a bazillion pages long (it also managed to dramatically cut down on the swearing front, to which I give the editor mass credit). It also brought in part of the emotional front of the book which was satisfying to read.
The movie was rather disappointing however :they managed to Americanise the whole situation and they ditched all of the original names save for a few. They also altered the plot , including the loop events and the appearance of the mimics- they looked more like demon groot than anything else......The main point I want to Inc,due is that they KILLED THE EMOTION entirely and they made it all end happily which I personally feel murdered the sadistic tone of the book :(
Now , to the actual book. I feel that this is the best version of the story, unlike the manga, it includes extra details onto the plot and some different characters are also incorporated. The biggest success was the portrayal of the sadness that Keiji felt by the end of the book. I thought it was presented the best in the original text and it was the only version that brought tears to my eyes as I read.
This is the first work of Japanese science fiction that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed It in its many iterations. Quite a simple premise was turned into something really cool.

Much better plot than the movie.

The background history of Rita is much better explained and connected with the story. It really connects you with how Rita and Keiji feels about the loops and the mimetics.

The ending is brave and very exciting. Makes you feel sorry for the fact that the manga is so short. But is enough, you get to the end satisfied with how the problem was solved.

Very fast paced mangá.

I think the way the loop is portrayed is much better (and natural) than the movie. You can feel the motivation that the main character have to improve at each loop and how it changes him from an peaceful guy into a killing machine.

The mimetics are also more scary. Even though the design is simple, it succeed in creating a alien atmosphere to the battle. Also, the fact that the war has been going for many years makes its impact on the world to feel more dense than a recently started battle.

Of course you have many manga's characteristics that are there just as fan-service. The inocent-powerful girl, the big breasted lady, the loser-platonic-lover guy, etc. But overall it's a very entertaining reading.

I think I liked the movie better. The main protagonist is more interesting, and the ending is wildly different in this version.
