This is a bind up of three prequel novellas to the Dorothy Must Die series. We follow how Dorothy became so wicked.

I was not a big fan of these novellas.

I enjoyed seeing how Dorothy started to become the evil tyrant that she is now. After returning to Kansas, Dorothy felt so lost. She was just so lost and unsure about everything. While she was happy to be reunited with her aunt and uncle she just wanted to return to Oz.

Her novella was the only one I really enjoyed. It was the only story that I felt added to the story. The other two didn't feel like it was need.

I give this book a C.

And this book is a bind up of the most recent Dorothy Must Die novellas that take place before the events of the first book.

My rating on each novella:

No Place Like Oz: 5 stars

The Witch Must Burn: 4.5 stars

The Wizard Returns: 3 stars

Overall a good read and at least we get to witness Dorothy's road to corruption which was nice.

I like getting back stories on a couple of the characters in the Dorthy must die series. You should definitely read Dorthy Must Die before the Stories or you'll be a bit lost. The amount of selfishness that develops in Dorthy was initially shocking, but that explains why she must die. I really wanted more of Jellia's story, but what we do learn is very interesting. The Wizard is still a mystery to me, other than being blindingly selfish and power hungry like Dorothy.

I enjoyed this book and it had me interested from the very beginning. However, I was a little disappointed because all of the events that happened seemed to be over with very quickly. Like when Dorothy meets Glinda and Glinda convinces her that she was simply trapped in a cage - it seemed like it should have taken Dorothy a little bit more convincing to believe it. That was the only thing that really bothered me the most.

No Place Like Oz * (One Star)
This was the least enjoyable story of all three. While it tried to remain truthful to the original novel by referencing her wearing silver shoes the first time, Glinda was portrayed as in the movie in pink, while she had red hair, a white dress and blue eyes in the novel. I never got over the mistake on page 40, "Henry hurried after, her but he wasn't as easy on his feet as she was, and he stumbled a few times as he tried to get up". Out of the three view points of the three stories, Dorthy was the least interesting.
The Witch Must Burn****(Four Stars)
This was the best story of the book in my opinion, probably due to the fact Jellia is my favourite character we meet. I find issues though with this part, "We have cornfields that grow pre-roasted corn on the cob and talking animals"(page 165), on account how would she know otherwise? She's been in Oz for her life, never visiting the world Dorthy and the Wizard have come from. It wouldn't be stranged to her, and since she and Dorthy never got a long, and she'd never met the Wizard she would know of nothing for comparison.
The Wizard Returns *** (Three Stars)
This one had the least plot holes to me, and was the second most attention grabbing. I can't really complain much on this one, minus the ending is horrible if you love the character (not spoiling).
1+4+3=8 stars/3 stories=2.66 stars or 3
I shall be reading the next story.

This is actually 3 prequel novellas to the [Dorothy Must Die] series. I had already read the first story, [No Place Like Oz], which I thought was ok. That's sort of the origin story of Dorothy's return to Oz that sets the whole story up. It's good, but Dorothy is not the most interesting character Paige has re-written. The second two, [The Witch Must Burn], which is told from the perspective of one of the top maid/servants in Dorothy's castle (previously Ozma's castle), is well-told, well written, and interesting! It introduces the rebellion, which has a major role in the main series and gives some background and depth to some of the characters we get to know better in the main series.

The third novella, [The Wizard Returns] was probably my favorites in the novella-prequel-series so far. It, of course, sets up what has happened to the Wizard since Dorothy exposed him as a fake and he was forced to leave the Emerald City. I really love the introduction of Pete in the Wizard's story, as well as more information regarding the Wizard and his motivations. Looking forward to reading (or listening to :)) more prequels, including [Heart of Tin] and [The Straw King], which are already out & spotlight the Tin Woodman and The Scarecrow! These are also really reminding me that I'm really looking forward to the third book in the main series, [Yellow Brick War]... Way to go Paige! I'm very impressed w/ the whole new universe she's created with these very familiar characters!

Overall,

That was even better than the first book. I should've read this before the first novel but I'm glad I read it now ... the first story (No Place Like Oz) should be read after finishing the classic novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It provides all the things you need to know about the first novel of this series (Dorothy Must Die)! ♡
