A chilling historical by one of my auto buy authors. Horror at its finest. Supernatural elements with harsh realities of Japanese internment camps.

Not book related. Feeling overwhelmed.

I didn't click with it as quickly as I did The Hunger, but I think it was a very effective story for the message it was trying to convey.

Having previously read The Hunger, I expected a much differently-horrific story than The Fervor ultimately served up. There are some events in history that remain nebulous and poorly-understood and perhaps eternally fated to never be fully known, to never have their truest nexuses uncovered or brought to light, but the imprisonment of Japanese-Americans was not one of them. We know that the paranoia, xenophobia, and wartime stress and fear that caused people to turn on their neighbors - their friends and countrypeople - are all seeded and rooted in each of us still, in our social systems and our culture and our humanity, just as they have been for thousands of years. They come not from outside of us, but from inside, from the places that we've yet to outgrow and excise and fully - hopefully - escape.

Right?

Sort of. In our world, yes. In the world of The Fervor, maybe not.

While a bit less of a true horror novel than The Hunger, The Fervor's currents
Spoiler(hehe)
of mystery, fear, and longing still come together to make for an intoxicating read.

That was incredibly dark and depressing. The story, rooted in historical events about WWII internment camps, medical experiments, xenophobia, etc., was hauntingly detailed. The blend of historical reality with horror and the paranormal created an intense and unsettling atmosphere. The storytelling was powerful and thought-provoking, with compelling characters and a well-executed multi-POV structure. I found it to be very well written and deeply moving.
