The bad guy started twirling his mustache, and I couldn't take it anymore. Too stupid, plus cartoonish villain = fail.

I've described Matthew Reilly to my friends as "Imagine that Michael Bay picked up a pen instead of a camera" And this book proves it. Filled with (admittedly comical at times) action, the plot moves quickly and rarely, if ever, slows down. There may be a few too many exclamation points in his descriptions, but Reilly is my guilty pleasure author for action.
4 stars when I first read it years ago, 3 stars on this reread but still a fun book!
This book was pretty good. I liked it, and it was fun and all, but... I think I like [author: James Rollins] more. This is an adventure novel about a big solar eclipse which is going to destroy the planet unless someone can collect all the pieces of the top of the Great Pyramid and put them in place. The teams that are trying to get this done are a Big Evil American team and a Small Good Guys From Several Unrepresented Countries Including But Not Limited To Australia And Canada team. There might be a third team, I forget, it's been about a year since I read this. But it's fun, you have to kind of turn off your brain and enjoy the ride but it's fun. The reason they're racing to get the pieces together is because not only do they save the world if they do it also, the team that gets their soil under the cap gets ultimate power. Sorry, I mean... Ultimate Power. So, they go around the world searching for The 7 Wonders of The World and making it past ingenious traps to get the pieces of the Cap Piece.
And that's what kind of ruins it for me. Matthew Reilly has really out done himself in describing some of the traps, but there's one later on in the book where it's almost like he just says "And they carefully crossed the room" which is crap. I want to know HOW they crossed the room. You just said that the room is filled with giant spiky pits and spikes that shoot out of the floor, but they just cross the room? What the hell? And there's maps of all the traps, which is awesome because it means you can have a better idea of how the characters get past the traps and what the traps look like. Also, I think that I'm thrown off by the fact that he will have this action adventure let's-cut-people-in-half-with-gunfire story going and then will have 9 chapters about Lilly. Which is all well and good and breaks the pace alright and all, but in some places it really doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the book.
Like I said, I liked this book, especially the end, but I really wanted to like it more I think.

Indiana Jones meets 80s B movie action hero with a touch of Robert Langdon.
This is a quick adventure novel with a lot of action set pieces which reads like a movie plot.
Utterly ridiculous that traps set millenia ago have live animals still in them and that people can escape a lava room byputting their hand through lava .
A quick silly read which can get you out of a reading slump but not much otherwise.
The interludes of ' A girl named Lily' were heart-warming but other than that there isn't much known about the characters.
