Yay!! The charm from the first book is back for me XD This one was SO much fun. It had the eerie scariness and horror from the second book but this time it was in more manageable doses. I really liked the new characters and how the old ones were involved. The plot felt bigger but we still had these mini sub-plots which were really interesting. It was funny and well-written and action-packed. I think I might even like it better than the first one!
I listened to this on audiobook and it was really well done. The sea hag's voice omg. So many accents and inflections and people-it felt like a performance and always captured my imagination.

Spoiler
So, the teleporters are dying...and by someone they trust. I thought for sure it was another teleporter because how else do you kill one? But no, lil Paddy was actually Batu (sounds like Vatu btw). He's a mortal who wants to become a god so he summoned the Faceless Ones. When he gave Valkyrie the ring that turned off her powers I was like "um, yeah something's wrong here."
Fletcher Ren was a welcome addition to this book. A dark haired, cocky English teen? Reminded me of Will Herondale lol.
"How come the only people with eyes in this room are me and her?" ASKING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS HERE MY BOY.
I so ship him with Valkyrie and I get the feeling that's what Landy is going for because he threw in some angst in here with the reflection getting Valkyrie's first kiss and all these mentions of boys in her life. But yeah when he came back at the end for Valkyrie to save her from The Faceless Ones I was like "this is happening people!" So is he the last teleporter in the world...or just Ireland?
The sea hag was very interesting, I liked how freaking scary she was even when she wasn't doing anything. As if Vatu threw her into the ocean for scooping them off the bridge during the trade. So much shady crap went down, I did not see the bomb on Guild thing coming though.
As if the Administrator was the mole, who even freaking noticed the secretary in this series? And when she got electrocuted by her own trap bug-style, damn. Speaking of, the whole imprisonment scenario was scary. When Crux came after Valkyrie when there was a civilian around that was scary. And in the forest at the end when he was injured and she was trying to help him he was still trying to arrest her, priorities my guy. Then throwing her in with Scapegrace was freaking awful. I have a feeling we will run into him again...
I just want one book where Tanith doesn't get really injured. Okay? She literally got stabbed, fell off a building and I don't even want to go into whatever the crap happened in the final battle.
It was super cool and bizarre when the White Cleaver came to fight alongside Tanith at the end. Everyone was like "necromancy is so dark and awful and necromancers can't be trusted" but they literally came to help for no reason multiple times. Plus, they did no zombie summoning (apart from aforementioned Cleaver) just awesome shadow throwing! But apparently Wreath wants to apprentice Valkyrie which honestly sounds great. It raised questions for me though, so Elementals can do Adept magic and vice versa? Can people do a mix or once you've locked in that's it? Or is it just what you're most known for/what you use the most?
Honestly, the Faceless Ones are awful awful. Are they really gods or more just really powerful scary things? Woah, that's a philosophical debate right there. But yeah the fact they melt your features when they possess you is awful. I did not judge Gallow for cutting off his arm rather than having it track him through his cult Batu brand. They point and you explode or turn inside out (did the other evil bitches from books past get their power inspo from here??). Mr Bliss got shredded yikes yikes yikes. That they show up as ideas is awful, I don't want to know what trouble a mad Crux will be. When China was talking to him and getting the sceptre and asking who else knew her secret I was like "Crux you are marked for death." It has something to do with Skulduggery I think, so I think China maybe divulged the location of his family so they died type situation. Why else would she be afraid of Skulduggery?
The whole situation where Valkyrie was trapped in the ghost house and the rooms kept changing so she couldn't escape was awful and totally Monster-House-esque. When the door became a mouth and the window eyes-nah.
At least they got rid of the Faceless Ones and the Grotesquery and...Skulduggery got pulled through the portal. I've read this before but I forgot, but I spoiled myself by reading the back of the next book. I don't know, I didn't really care to be honest? Maybe because he's already dead, or because this will lead to a freaking wild plot next book?
Kenspeckle is my everything, I love him so much. He is so nice but so not wanting to get involved in any bullshit. When Sanguine knocked out Valkyrie's tooth and she was crying and he was trying to make her feel better ;( my heart. “I will heal your wounds but I will not facilitate your battles.”
Ghastly's awake! I forgot how cool he was and how handy it is for Valkyrie to have clothes that fit lol.
When Valkyrie used the Sceptre and accidentally destroyed China's book and she was so upset I really connected to her on a deeper level.
Once again, I love her parents and how they just banter and go off on vacations. Very good parenting.

"What kind of doctor dresses in brown leather?"
"The kind that looks good in it."
"Her dad came down the stairs, picked up the passport and opened it. “This isn’t mine,” he said. “This belongs to an ugly man wearing a stupid expression.”"
"Fletcher, on the other hand, was being thrown about like an old shoe in a washing machine, and he did not appreciate it.”

Overall, this was a strong book! I am super intrigued to see what happens past the point that I've previously read. There's some cool stuff a-brewin! I was enthralled the whole time and I was very pleased with how Landy can make the third book the best. How much more traumatised by life/death can Skulduggery be? Let's go book four, into the portal!

I love the world of Valkyrie and Skulduggery and have since I was young. I have been rereading the series and am enjoying it just as much as I did the first time. The books are so funny and tell a story like no other. Forever a favorite.

Been reading this because a friend loves the series and I do think I'm hooked. I've been particularly affected by the scenes about parents and adults and their connections and responsibilities towards children

This is quite possibly my favourite Skulduggery Pleasant book! Enjoy reading it the first time and it is always one I remember fondly. Don’t remember it being so short but honestly I forgot about the plot twists and enjoyed being surprised all over again! So good!
