This review is going to be a demonstration of reviewer bias, I guess. When I reviewed _sheepfarmers daughter_, I wasn't particularly impressed because it[return]was typical fantasy, and that's not really my thing. However, this book is typical space opera, and that is my thing. I personally enjoyed it. Until reading[return]the review just below mine, I even thought the plot was a new one. Yes, I know, I know: I'm probably the only SF fan in the entire history of the universe[return]not to have read anything by Lois Mcmaster Bujold. Look, I've only been around for 18 years or so, and for the first 8 of those I wasn't really reading[return]all that much. I can't have read everything.

It took a while to get going, but then it got better. I liked the main character and her development.

Ky looked at the best of the crew of the Glennys Jones - Quincy, Mehar, Gary, and the rest. They looked back at her expectantly, waiting for orders.
"What's the word, captain?" asked Quincy.
"I'm not going to sugarcoat it," said Ky, "But cargo holds one through ten are filled to the brim with boots. Jackboots, in fact. And our contract stipulates that we must lick every single one of those boots. One hundred percent of them."
"We can lick those boots more efficiently if we..." interjected Gary.
"Let me finish," said Ky. "As captain of this ship I am ordering you all to help me - to help the Glennys Jones - lick all of those boots," said Ky. "It's our duty to fulfill this contract. If any or all of you refuse, I cannot promise that I won't kill you. But I can promise you that I would be down there in cargo holds one through ten licking every single one of those boots myself. Captain's honor," said Ky.
Her crew nodded in solemn unison, their resolve renewed for the worthy task at hand.
"Yes ma'am," saluted Quincy.
Ky saluted back.

I liked how Ky handled the tense situations that came up. My only complaint is that I get a little tired of female characters being "misunderstood" and deemed incapable for things that aren't even true. Overall that didn't distract from the story enough to drop it to three stars.

This book was a gift from my best friend, and it took me a while to actually start reading it, but as I opened it I realised I recognised the author's name, she had written alongside Anne McCaffrey, so I was already looking forward to it more. And I loved it, the adventures of poor Ky (not that she is actually poor) kept me reading and wanting to ignore the rest of the world. Can't wait to see what happens next.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would because generally I'm not super into military sci fi. I liked that we see Ky grow into her new role as captain and have to confront real life situations now that she's outside of the military academy. I think we see how her circumstances force her to confront what it is she wants and the ways that others perceive her versus her own self reflection. I'm curious to see more of her adventures and the path she ultimately decides to travel.

Love love love! Kylara is a great character. I can tell why Elizabeth Moon is considered a staple in good sci fi reading. It was amazing from beginning to end. I loved it and can't wait to read more adventures.

I quite enjoyed this, but felt the characterisation was a bit flat in places. Not sure if I'll continue with the series, particularly with what I know about Moon's political views.
