This was okay?

I understand Kambili having a crush on a priest but uh didn't like how he interacted with her, knowing that she loved him. Uncomfy. It made me, who once was a 15 year old who crushed on 26 year olds, think about how those men treated me, and how they didn't. And uh they were better to me than this priest is to Kambili because they didn't entertain me. Because I was a CHILD. And they weren't even priests?? So like.....cmon

Otherwise, I was having a great time with this book, until I realized that I could hear when the audiobook narrator was swallowing.

If I had been unable to hear her swallowing, I probably would have rated this book as a four

But two stars have been removed for wet mouth sounds, and two stars have been removed for a grown man paying too much attention to a fifteen-year-old girl

Total score: 3/5 stars

Rich development of every character with a beautiful storyline. Although it was intentional, I wish there would have been more dialogue ant times ans I felt something was missing. More so I wish there was more depth of understanding Kambili’s relationship with her brother and mother throughout the book because I felt like this only came out in the end. (Although I am sure this may have been intentional as well to show the drastic shift in Kambili’s relationship with not only her family, but with herself.)
challenging emotional medium-paced

I loved the rich imagery and emotions hidden underneath the surface of the main protagonist, a Nigerian teenager Kambili. She is raised with a strict and physically abusive  father who is spiritually and financially generous to their community. Her pain is hidden beneath the surface as others revere him as a leader. Their affluent and privileged but solemn life is a contrast to that of her aunt (dad’s sister) who has a small home with limited plumbing and electricity but full of laughter and joy.

It’s been years since I’ve read anything by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, but it didn’t take long to remember how much I enjoy her work. Gotta love some crisp, compelling prose!!!

The audiobook narrator also did a fabulous job

I love the subtly of Adichie’s writing. This story beautifully and painfully traces the effects of abuse within Kambili and Jaja, as well as portraying a part of Nigerian culture so well that I felt a new understanding and appreciation for it.

4,5.
