kindle - dealt with family violence. Really did not like americanah so wouldn’t have read this was it not on kindle unlimited as I really didn’t like the authors previous work I read Americanah. It was ok, if I could read it for longer periods I’d get into it but it just wasn’t calling me. It got much better when the children went to their aunt’s, as the story was much happier and I enjoyed seeing their world unfold and become less regimented (whole time I was dreading them going back though lol). It was interesting to see how religion was portrayed at the Dad’s (traditionally, strict, prohibitive) compared to the aunt’s where it was more about love - it was interesting for me as someone so against religion to see it portrayed in a loving way for once lol. Really got into it by the end and really really enjoyed it, although i know Heid studied it at A Level and I really wouldn’t be smart enough to do that, I did just really enjoy the book

While reading this novel I had no idea that it was Adiche’s debut and I never would’ve guessed it. Purple Hibiscus is beautifully written, but that’s only the cherry on top of this novel’s brilliance. The story Adiche tells moved me more than almost any other novel I’ve read this year. Her character development and ability to capture human suffering and beauty at the same time are next level. Definitely will be reading more from her and I should’ve picked up one of her novels much sooner.
