I learned about this book in a Vanity Fair article about up and coming African authors, not realizing that it is considered Young Adult fiction until I found out where it is shelved in our local library. That said, it's got some pretty heavy themes for YA--family violence, politics, religion--which make it a more complex read. Having lived in West Africa, I really loved all the little details about food, music, culture, etc. Wish I had a teenage version of me to recommend the book to!

This is my third book by this Nigerian and American author . I have loved them all. I read it in one day, on a plane. Lovely writing, powerful sense of place and some strong women characters. The feelings and situation that make it hard for abused family members to break free from the abuser seem realistically presented. The father is a hideous and complicated character. It just this second occurred to me that he could be a symbol of colonialism, with its mixed legacy of progress and pain for the colonized.
