2 hours 27 minutes - This was one of the most emotional books I've ever read, I think in part to just how relatable the subjects discussed are. Academic pressure, fear of failure, the idea that you must be the best at everything and that you have this pre-determined path you cannot waver from, are all ideas presented and challenged in this book. The characters experiencing these problems are all loveable and the reader cannot help but sympathise and feel for them. I didn't like the inclusion of the transcripts. I found them boring and hard to follow - it was a good concept but the execution didn't match the idea. However, all in all, this was a wonderfully written book.

I really love this book. The characters are such a diverse, complex, realistic cast. Includes: Demi sexual rep, Bisexual rep, Gay rep, Lesbian rep, Ethiopian rep, Korean rep, and Indian rep. All of which are queer. The book didn’t feel like most YA novels where everything is overdramatized to keep the reader interested, and that helped to understand the characters on an emotional level. The only problem I have with it is when Dae Sung (Daniel) confesses to Frances that he’d prefer the name Dae Sung instead of Daniel and Frances and everyone else in the book continue to call him Daniel and the topic is never brought up again. It felt like the author just completely forgot that they wrote that and just moved on. P.S. I love the little references to her first novel: Solitare

This is a relatable story for academic achievers. It tackles about academic pressure and how oftentimes, we think that our future relies so much on our academic excellence. Moreover, this story has strong themes of friendship, parental relationship, self-identity, and mental health issues.

I'll leave you to the book's opening line, "Hello. I hope somebody is listening.."

July 2024 reread:
It's been 3 years since I read this for the first time and I think I can confidently say that it is one of my comfort books. I love the characters so much, the concept is is very interesting and it's just one of those books that I can read for long periods of time without getting bored. I don't think I know an author that portrays being a teenager better than Alice Oseman.
My only complaints is that the end feels a bit rushed and that I would have liked to know Daniel's character better, I ended up not getting why he and Aled get along so well besides knowing each other since they were born.

Alice Oseman has not disappointed me yet ! This book is another diverse, brilliantly written book with lovable and relatable characters. I’m always impressed with Oseman’s accurate teenage characters and her portrayal of the internet, and this book was no different. Highly recommend all her books :)
