Too much going on with the murder puzzles. Too little character development. Too obscure selection of the criminal. Just overall too much of irrelevant story points and too little of what would have made this a good read for me.

The plot is good. There are enough suspects to keep you guessing. The clues are there. The author had to create a poem of ancient structure similar and related to Beowulf, and link the perpetrator and murders to the theme of the poem - it is very well done.

I read reviews that compared this novel to those of Dan Brown but I see it as very heavily influenced by Jeffrey Deaver’s Lincoln Rhyme novels, most specifically the Bone Collector. But this book falls short of those in writing skill. Here the characters are less developed and the dialog, especially in the beginning, is awkward and contrived. Otherwise this might be 4 stars.

I will add that, as weak as the motive is for the serial killings in this book is, and as far fetched and convoluted as the process of carrying them out is, it’s no worse than the ones in Bone Killer.

I hated this book, I thought it would be more interesting what it was but I was literally the whole time bored out of my mind. The story plot could of been a heck of a lot better than what it was!

I've only read a few mysteries and I really enjoyed this one
Dr. Evan is basically a modern day Sherlock Holmes of language and it was super interesting seeing his thought process and the stages of transliteration.
As someone that knew almost nothing about viking culture, runes, and transliteration, Nickless does a great job at explaining everything so even I could understand it.

I thought for sure I knew who the serial killer was a few times, changing my mind a few times thinking that I was thinking outside the box, but I definitely didn't guess correctly

I think I picked this up as a Kindle First Reads pick or maybe during a sale, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Nickless is a Colorado author AND one of the main characters in this story is a dwarf.
.
The description of this book made me slightly apprehensive, but I really enjoyed this one. The plot revolves around a set of perplexing murders that involves Runes and ancient ritual. Addie Bisset, a Chicago police officer, calls in her friend and well known professor, Dr. Evan Wilding (aforementioned person with dwarfism), in to help her solve the murders. The story is absorbing and obviously well researched. I somehow ended up reading two books in February where falconry features prominently in the story line and I really appreciated its innovative use in this plot.
.
As far as Nickless's portrayal of a character with a disability, it's decent. I have mixed feelings about the romance element, but there are more books coming and I have a feeling that's going to be fleshed
out going forward. I appreciate that Dr. Wilding is a fully drawn character who is brilliant and accomplished. It's a little unrealistic for someone with dwarfism to find a house that is fully accessible to them to rent, but I'm ok with that nod to fantasy.
.
The second installment of this series is coming in December and I will definitely be adding it to my #tbrlist

A solid murder/mystery with interesting characters and a story drenched in wonderful Viking lore that left me wishing it was a horror novel vs a thriller.

Sometimes I flip to the end out of boredom.

Sometimes curiosity.

This time, it was the latter, and YAHOO! What an ending!
