Hawkins, Rachel. School Spirits. Disney-Hyperion, 2013.
Izzy is a monster fighter a la Buffy, but when her sister disappears, her mom decides the family needs to take a break and settle down. For the first time in her life, Izzy is going to attend a normal high school and try to live a normal life. Or so she thinks. Izzy soon discovers that her new school is haunted, and she has to solve the mystery of the haunting before her new friends are all killed. Can Izzy hunt down the ghosts before it's too late?
This book was mildly suspenseful and enjoyable. Fans of paranormal books will undoubtedly enjoy it, and I've had difficulty keeping it on my shelves once my Twlight groupies come in the library.
Recommended for: teens, especially fans of paranormal books
Red Flags: lots of violence
Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

An adorable spin off of the Hex Hall series. "The first page of SCHOOL SPIRITS opens on Izzy in the middle of an attempt to stake a vampire. It’s a fun, clever scene with Izzy explaining how easy it is to kill a vampire, but that capturing one is another story, all while she is sitting on top of a vampire, and mentioning that a lot about vampires is “dorky.” It sets the tone for the rest of the book and pulled me right in. What stands out about SCHOOL SPIRITS is its lightheartedness and humor, making it an easy book to sit down with and breeze through."

I love izzy & her nativity! She is so socially backwards due her home schooling and Brannick upbringing. She's trying to prove herself to her mother that she's ready to go out & do jobs on her own. Torin is a great character and I look forward to see if the prophecy regarding him & izzy comes true (if the sequel ever gets written....). Izzy's story was a delight to read - 4.5 stars
this book was good. i am in love with the character named dex. i how they thought the killer was one person but it was some one else. i want there to be a squeal but who knows.i recommend this book.
fast read but the ending was quite rushed. too much happened in the last 30 pages. the death, the adoption. it was weird
I was really hoping that this sequel would provide some insight and background into the Brannick family and Torin. Unfortunately, it didn't add anything new or exciting to the world.
The characters, while fun, felt like carbon copies of the original group from the first three books. The plot was super predictable and campy.
I still enjoyed reading it, because I really love Hawkins' writing, but this book was completely unnecessary. If the series had continued on after this and there were other books to explore the characters and tie up the loose ends, I think this would have been a great start. But without anything else, it just really fell flat.
