Erika is a remarkable storyteller and her latest book is amazingly written and researched. The story follows Violette and Virginia, two women who do their part during WWII. Violette trains in Britain for the SOE before being shipped to France to become a courier. Virginia is American who married a French man and becomes part of the Resistance via friends. The two accidentally meet at a train station, spend moments together before they go their separate ways. The story progresses as they each make their marks against the Germans until they’re both arrested. The story, at times was hard to read, yet shows how utterly important these two women were for the Resistance. After reading this, I want to read more about the bravery and selflessness of the French Resistance during the war. This was a great read; but have tissues handy because I cried a few times, especially towards the end!

For a book they purports to be about women, it fails the Bechdel test. Yes, there are at least two female characters and yes, they talk to each other, but the book can’t go more than a few pages without being about men. Heavy emphasis on the romantic partners of the women. Overall, if not exactly trite, perhaps not a books I needed as it didn’t add to my knowledge of the resistance in a France, the SOE, Ravensbrook, etc.
