I did enjoy the book and its premise. Even if I did know the the overarching story by pg 10, I was curious what horrible bloodiness and terror might fall in the many pages of this book. In terms of bloody, I was not disappointed. In terms of terror. Don't get me wrong, the disappointment in lack of terror was not enough to make me not like the book, but it did once again bring to mind the question: Why do people think King is so freaking great? If people say they like terror or scary they should read Poe, or better yet, Lovecraft. now THAT is a creepy bastard! Honestly though, all joking aside, it is a quick read and still enjoyable, unlike the end of the Dark Tower *shiver*

Mr. Gaunt comes to town, opens a shop, Needful Things, and sells people exactly what they want....for a price of course. But that price isn't entirely money. Part money, part deed or trick really. And he always knows exactly what people want.
I really enjoyed the writing, the characters, the plot. Everything really. I liked the messages I got through-out the book and how it made me think. I didn't care for the ending though and, to me, it felt like it lost a bit of the point. A bit too...religious...for my taste. Though apart from the ending I loved how the religions of the towns people (Baptist and Catholic) played a (large) part in the story. My dad is Baptist and i've heard how much he hates Catholics so it all felt very realistic to me. I know (way too many) people exactly like those in this book.
Sure i'm not entirely sure that every character really played an important part in the story but I had fun with it. Oh and I really related to Polly with her chronic pain (from arthritis in her case). I definitely have tabs in this book because of it and it made me cry. I felt so much for her.
Plenty of content warnings would apply in this book.

I’m in two minds with Stephen King’s books. I have no doubt that I love them, my quibble is how long they are. On one hand, it allows you to recline into the version of small town America that he’s created, to lean into the characters and really get to know them. On the other, as in this case, the stories could probably be told in half the time with just the same amount of satisfaction garnered from the end.
Nevertheless, this is simply a quibble. I enjoy relaxing into the worlds he creates, only to be kept on my toes as he develops a growing sense of foreboding and the pay off is always exciting.
Needful Things is slightly too predictable in terms of overarching storyline to be a full five star read, however it’s certainly a solid and enjoyable read.
