Needful Things

Stephen King

3.84 AVERAGE

This story was highly enjoyable, with a simple but yet involved plot. It could have been a hundred or two pages shorter though, as it went on it became long-winded, especially with the new characters it became harder to follow and less interesting.

Also, Stephen, women desire more than sex and relationships. You should know. This could have been fantastic if the characters had been a little more complex.

Leave it to Mr. King to do a mindfuck and a half on you. The start, the end, and everything in between was a wild ride with amazing commentary on small town life. I‰ЫЄm staying 5 stars but maybe 4.5? I‰ЫЄll have to think about it. Until then, what a great October read!!!

I have to say I am pretty biased when it comes to the works of Stephen King because I have genuinely enjoyed everything he has written so far.

I find it difficult sometimes to switch between genres as I read new books and this was no exception. The previous book I read was a quick light chick lit book which I also thoroughly enjoyed. But needful things is most definitely a slow burn if ever there was one. I’ve never known an author be so brilliant at slowing and quickening the pace as Stephen King is. But a slow burn is needed with this novel as there are many characters and developments that you need to take your time to let it all sink in.

Overall it is a great premise and I enjoyed how the story went on and the character development was great! You can relate to a lot of the characters for even the smallest nuances.

Another great one from Stephen King glad I finally got round to reading it.

5 stars. I consider it, comparing it to his books that I have read, the best of King’s books.
Things I liked:
1) going back to the town of Castle Rock - it feels as if I had been there already, a bit like home
2) a shop where you can find just what you’ve always wished for - sounds like magic… And King did great in that the things each character got, fitted perfectly to their personalities and their past.
3) all characters and back stories
4) Gaunt - step aside Pennywise and Overlook Hotel, this guy is the meanest bad guy ever! I loved him!
5) the harmless pranks and how they triggered one tragedy after another.
6) Various characters from other novels are mentioned but you don’t need to know who those people are in order to understand the plot.
This book was amazing!

Okay so there is way more in this book than there ever needed to be BUT if you like that kind of Stephen King world/town building you won’t mind. The two main characters are honestly some of the best of his I’ve read so far. Alan is a genuinely good guy doing his best by his town. Polly is a realistically fleshed out woman, and I really liked the way she was depicted without being victimized/villainized which I can’t say about so many King women so far. The actual villain is great, scary but with personality.

Enjoyable but nothing special. Some interesting scenes of small town bickering though and King really nails the casual racism of rural New England.

(4.5). This was such a great small town horror book and I loved seeing the dynamics of the people in the town. I particularly enjoyed the last two pages, and the characters as a whole. I'd say this might be my second favorite King book, right up there with 11/22/63 and just below Misery.
Highly recommend.

I love this book. It is the second King novel I read, and after reading a few more it is still one of my favourites. The story is just so well-written and it shows how well King can weave all these different stories and people together in a story that works so damn well. What I also love is that the story constantly kept me uneasy and on edge, and I had no idea how it would end until the very last pages.
