It’s been 13 years since I read the previous book, so perhaps that skewed my interest in the story a bit since I don’t remember anyone but Mary and Sherlock. But, after the first third of the book, the plot picked up pace and it was entertaining enough to listen to while he ticking household tasks off my list.
I thought of quitting this book quite a few times (I mean, a whole chapter on pigeon shooting, no thank you!!!) but I kept thinking, there must be a reason why it has such good reviews, so I read a bit more, a bit more again and then, once I passed the half way mark, it all changed and it became so much more fast paced and interesting that I read the rest in one sitting. It's as if the first and second halves belonged to different books, but it was worth the perseverance.

I take back what I said about O Jerusalem feeling out of place because it sets the stage for this book so well, and if we hadn't seen these characters since book 2, it wouldn't have hit as well. I loved this book. It was everything I love in a historical. The characters and their motivations and their varying loyalties just really got to me. I don't believe we ever see Marsh and Ali again, but I hope they (and Iris) are well.

Each book stands on its own, but reading them sequentially adds some richness.
I really liked this one. Complex layering of characters from O Jerusalem, plus a vivid glimpse of WWI, and a thrilling ending.

Little slow. Seemed like most of the suspense happened in the last 50 pages.
Very good, really enjoyed. It's not as stellar as the previous in the series, in my opinion, but I think it was very well done. It was a little looser, maybe, or more scattered. This author is fast becoming a favorite. It's a looooooong series, so we'll see if that's good or bad!
