Couldn't actually get through it. She fell in love with minor characters and devoted far too much time to them. Disappointing.

I really enjoyed this sixth book in the Mary Russell series. This is easily one of my favorites in the series. I loved the settings: the old English estate complete with secret passageways, ancient artifacts, and sprawling landscapes; WWI France, and even Canada. The plot really drew me in and the mystery was really quite good with lots of twists and turns.

Beloved characters from O Jerusalem are at the heart of this novel so I recommend reading O Jerusalem first in order to truly appreciate this book. There is also the addition of a dead soldier Gabriel whose writings will stay with the reader just as they did with Mary. He is the epitome of the tragic hero.

The audiobook version that I listened to was superb! The narrator did a fantastic job of giving voice to all the different characters.

This one was exciting, and very satisfying, especially character wise, and very heartbreaking, especially from a parenting point of view. Can every third or so book involve the Hazr brothers please? I read this in basically three days. Tonight I'll go to sleep at an acceptable human time.

I confess, this is only good and not great. Impress me, Laurie. You have a reputation in the Sherlock Holmes nouveau world to uphold! Still, I'll finish out the series; my loyalties to Russell run deep. :P

Really enjoyable way of untangling a "cold case" through family history, letters, and journal entries. I liked this one a lot!
