I think I liked the concept of this the best. The book itself seemed like too much teenaged drama. And I just couldn't care about the characters.

American Royals by Katharine McGee was an interesting read. When I first started it it sounded very much like the last book of The Selection because Maxon and American’s daughter was destined to be the first queen of the futuristic America and the whole dateline plotline was similar to that one too. I had to put it down because I had just finished reading that book, but a week later I was able to get into it and forget the other book.

I liked how this put it’s own spin on history. I did like the characters but I felt like every time I warmed up to one of them or felt a connection, a new chapter with a new POV happened. The character connection was there but it just felt like the brakes were tapped on each time I understood them more. I also wasn’t expecting a four character POV with all individual chapters but I got into that about halfway through finally.

There was one obvious character I didn’t like, the one that everybody doesn’t like. I wish we had gotten to know Sam and Teddy more, but I was rooting for Jefferson and Nina the most. (Slight spoiler, but it is pretty obvious.) I did like all of the pairings for once, this doesn’t usually happen. I got a direct comment on Instagram from the author saying nobody’s stories are finished, so it seems like all gloves are off for the second book. Anything seems possible for it. I totally got Chuck and Blair vibes from Ethan and Daphne.

I am a bit torn about the rating of this book. I think it is a 3.5 which is really good still. 3.5 doesn’t mean the book was terrible. 3 star ratings are still good! I think book two definitely will have potential since I thought American Royals improved within halfway throughout the book. It was good overall. I loved the cover, I thought it was gorgeous! This was a library ebook.

This has all the ingredients of a cheesy teen novel. Love triangles; the mean girls we hate and the young couples we want to end up together…. But it all takes place among royals in an America ruled by monarchy. If you’re looking for something meaningful and mature, this isn’t it! But if you love YA fiction, it’s fun. Especially fun to read the same week that a real Prince, Harry, is seriously dishing about real monarchies! (Seriously, there are parallels!)

I wanted to die at least 10 times while reading the first 4 pages. I will now be buying some bleach to rinse my brain and eyes.

Although I normally read fantasy, I absolutely LOVED this book. It felt a little predictable at times but I was still hooked.

I genuinely cared about all of the characters and their lives and feelings.
Except Daphne screw that back stabbing b*tch

The last 60 ish pages were a wild time. I was completely hooked. I went to Barnes and Noble to pick up the second one at 7:30 pm
