This book was a severe disappointment for me. I kept turning the last page back and forth hoping it'd continue and hopefully make sense. I didn't. I apologize for saying this but Ever is simply the most frustrating protagonist I've ever encountered. She's had four books to try and figure out all this immortality love business and she still hasn't gotten anywhere.
Yeah, the two major evil rogues are diminished (Roman and Drina) but her problems aren't done yet and shady character Jude has yet to capture my support. He did for like a couple minutes when Ever was having her soul sucide moment in Summerland but after his stunt in the last few chapters i just think he's an idiot. And the result of the situation is due to Ever's bad judgement in the first place.
Anyway, this isn't so much of a review as it is a ranting session. sorry. I'm just not impressd whatsoever and I'm not exactly thrilled about the next book coming out this winter. I'll probably read it because I can't just abandoned a series. Never been able to which sucks but whatever.
So read if you've already started the series but don't expect any real epiphany for Ever.

Although this was probably my least favorite of the series so far, it was still very good. The writing was a bit repetitive occasionally (the first time I've noticed that in this series), and I think that dampened my enthusiasm. I also never liked Haven much, and I like her even less now. That would be fine if she was meant to be a bad guy, but Ever's friendship with her just doesn't make sense. Meanwhile, I miss Miles (as he jets off to Florence for acting camp).
It amazed me that the quest for Ever and Damen to "shag their hearts out" (as Roman put it) could continue this long. And suddenly the love triangle is a love... pyramid? (Three guys, one Ever. Improbable but strangely believable, and definitely shocking!) The increasing amount of New Age-y, hippie, very California elements is odd to me, but I think it works well for the story. This installment also had a much more pronounced "message" about positive thinking/energy, appealing to the good part of bad people, etc. Then we finish with another surprising (and rather abrupt!) ending, so I can't wait to see where book 5 goes!

I cannot say I disliked the book, but there certainly were some annoying things about it.
Such as: Haven's momental acceptation and belief of what she was, the way that she just forgot what a great friend Ever was before she became immortal.
And one more thing, the thing I can't stress enough. Ever is so, so annoying. She seems so stupid and weak, just like she doesn't have her own will. Like she is a marrionette.
Now I am devastated for Roman's death. And I going to go spill my soul through tears!

Ever is trying to help Haven make the transition into life as an immortal. But with Haven drunk on her new powers and acting recklessly, she poses the ultimate threat — exposing their secret world to the outside. But Ever's struggle to keep the Immortals hidden only propels Haven closer to the enemy: Roman and his evil companions.
At the same time, Ever delves deeper into dark magick to free Damen from Roman’s power. But when her spell backfires, it binds her to the one guy who’s hell-bent on her destruction. Now there’s a strange, foreign pulse coursing through her, and no matter what she does, she can’t stop thinking about Roman — and longing for his touch. As she struggles to resist the fiery attraction threatening to consume her, Roman is more than willing to take advantage of her weakened state...and Ever edges closer and closer to surrender.
Frantic to break the spell before its too late, Ever turns to Jude for help, risking everything she knows and loves to save herself — and her future with Damen....
I admit that when I was a teenager, I spent most of every day dreaming that I possessed latent magical abilities that wouldn't awaken and some dreamy, mysterious guy was just going to swoop into our lunch table and sweep me off my feet. When I was a teen, it seemed like such a normal fantasy to have. The Immortals series makes me a little be embarrassed to have ever had such daydreams though.
One thing that I just do not understand about our protagonist, is how someone who can pick up a book and basically absorb the contents of it thanks to her Immortal powers still be so incredibly stupid. The author continues to tell us, in almost every book of this series like a refresher on what all Ever is capable of with her new found abilities but clearly having the gift to instantly know all of the answers by touch doesn't mean you're going to retain all the information you acquire. I mean, surely in one of the many books that Ever has picked up, she would have known better than to start messing around with magic and binding spells, right? Especially as a novice who has no understanding of what she's doing.
Dark Flame turns the plight of our darlings toward a darker path, and yet there's the beginning of some illumination happening. It feels as though the author has suddenly decided what direction that she wants to take the story, and the characters and we begin to see this unfolding. If I were to read back through these books, I could admit that there are hints being dropped here and there, but for someone reading through this series for the first time (admittedly if they make it thus far) those hints are very oblivious to the readers.
I was disappointed about the way Haven turned out. I'm sure that everyone knows at least one person in their life who's a little shallow, uncertain, and narcissistic but to see Haven turn out to be so heartless and nasty while power tripping really upset me. Part of me always likes to have faith that even the bad guys can be turned around, but here's Haven being an unrelenting prig and I actually felt saddened whenever there was another encounter between her and Ever.
Roman had potential to be a bad boy, and I suppose that being he was British he was also supposed to be charming with that accent. Unfortunately he also turned out a bit limp and disappointing. I can't fathom someone being six hundred years ago and still possessing such a childish outlook. From someone like Haven who suffers an identity crisis on top of teenage hormones I can understand, but seeing the way Roman acts and the decisions that he makes, and the dialogue.. it's like he's passed through time along with Damen and Drina, but the immortality that stunted his aging has also stunted his maturity growth. Talk about a pair of brats in the true sense of the word.
The indecisiveness of Ever and Damen has become something of a theme, more so than the whole immortality aspect. It's incredibly easy to grow tired of the will she, won't she dialogue that makes up so much of the story but at least we're starting to see some progress. I was annoyed with Ever being unable to think so much for herself, and constantly making the wrong decisions, but at least she's making decisions. Witnessing the impatience and recklessness of Ever is admittedly quite refreshing, and I'm glad at least that each of her bad decisions is followed up with repercussions that are not just magically fixed right away.
We begin to see more depth in our supporting characters. Sabine. Miles. Jude. Ava. The Twins. Part of me wishes that this was more evident earlier on in the series but I do understand that there's not always an opportunity to be so observant of characters when the focus of the story does not really allow it. Well, with the story being fully from Ever's perspective and all.
With only two books remaining in The Immortals series, I'm actually now looking forward to seeing what happens next.
