3.39 AVERAGE

3.5 stars. Cute & quick read for me. Ryan was absolutely adorable and I really liked Danny. She was sweet and had such a positive outlook on life even though she was going through hard times.

Quick read.

Wrong side of the track story. I liked that the heroine had her own goals and her own mind.

The writing was stilted and often times read a bit awkward so cannot quick it 4 stars.

Love a good sports romance!

This book was good. It was light and cute and I loved the character.
To be honest, there was something bothering me ... the fact they were in madly in love after like Two second?
The book would have been way better if it had a little more of storyline. But don't get me wrong, I loved the author writting and I will read the others. :)

The only bad thing I have to say about this book is how short it is. I really love sweet love stories like this one. I wish there was more to this one.

RATING: Category 1 (out of 5)
SUMMARY: If this was published, I can be an author too.
VERDICT: Seriously not worth reading

So, here were my problems with Off Sides

1) Ryan's POV
This male, 20-something American uni student hockey player used the expression "gosh". And called his girlfriend "toots". Nuff said.

2) Lack of character in all the characters.
Seriously. The descriptor of "two-dimensional" was created for the people in this book.

3) Failure of BASIC proof-reading

- “That guy is a fucking, asshole,”
- “You’re beef shouldn’t be with me”. YOU'RE
- “I let out a breath I apparently had pent up”: ENGLISH GRAMMAR DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT
- “Do you think I’ll meet your parents anytime soon”. No question mark. This is primary level stuff people.
- “I could give a shit that we have known each other for only a week”: COULD give a shit, as in, she does care. Seriously, where was editing?!! This leads to my next point

4) Flop of a plot........
Which can be summarised with "couple falls in love after knowing each other one week". ONE week. And that’s how you know that the author hasn’t bothered to at least ATTEMPT to make the romance realistic. This 20-something uni student seriously asks his girlfriend to marry him after dating for a week.

Absolutely no attempt was made to avoid any cliches either. Look, creating a truly original work is damn near impossible, but it is possible to still create a new story out of standard tropes. In this venture, Offsides failed miserably. Poor girl, rich boy. Rich boy has a snobby family/bitchy ex-girlfriend who hate poor girl. And in following a recent trend, girl is nearly raped by guy with a grudge against boyfriend, allowing boyfriend to swoop in and save the day. This does not mean that I think that rape is trivial (far from it), just that attempted rape against the female protagonist has become a common plot device in romance novels. It’s often used to show the guy as a hero, or provoke him to admit his true feelings for the girl if he has been denying them up to that point.

5) And then there is some more general stupidity:
- Depression seems to be my mood of choice”. All together now: you don’t choose to be depressed
- “I suppose I’ve done something to warrant the evil forces of nature targeting me with their cruel games”; this is a description of a few girls being bitchy.

To conclude, please refer to the verdict.

Meh.

Hero-rich, college hockey player, snobby family, interfering snobby ex

Heroine-poor, no family, college student, works at a diner

Story Conflict-couple has to deal with prejudice against heroine for being poor, working in a dinner, having purple hair and facial piercings.

I liked the story but had trouble with the conflict and it’s a major portion of the couples dealings. I did listen to the audiobook from the Audible Romance package. This has duel narration and both were very good.

Are we sure Sawyer Bennett wrote this? Just saying....
