I really loved this book. Just keep in mind it was written in the 80s about the 30s. Is it the most PC book in the world? Of course not. But it's still really sweet and the exploration into the motives of the characters is rich and deep. The movie was good but the book is even better.

I really hoped I would have enjoyed this book more than I actually did. I thought that Idgey and Ruth’s romance would have been something more, as well as the friendship of Evelyn and Ninny. Also it had to be said that this book has not aged well and many of the “progressive” thoughts are actually not progressive and just not as racist as everyone else. Overall the book was three stars but lost one for how poorly it has aged

It's a wonderful book, and I was lucky to get to know it.
It may sound ridiculous how many subjects there were: love, friendship, loyalty, murder, interracial conflicts... But believe me, it all combines beautifully.
What I also loved about this book is that there were no digressions, there was only the story and you had to think by yourself and oh, that was a pleasure! You are led to reflection but you are not forced to, and that's really great. And there was much to think about, too. The story itself is amazing, but it shows many aspects of different subjects as well, so don't doubt and read this book, I don't see a way you could regret it!

This book will make you laugh, cry, and contemplate life all at the same time. A beautiful story with an immersive atmosphere and loveable characters. Feels like a love letter to the small southern towns while still acknowledging the issues and dark parts of their history. I will be recommending this book to everyone that will listen.
