does some of the content not hold up to 2023 standards, sure? but I did still enjoy it
Since I grew up in a small Southern town, I was predisposed to love this book. I can't help myself. My favorite element of it is the small-town newspaper gossip columns that STILL run in most of the tiny newspapers I know. you have to read between the lines on these excerpts, but it is definitely not too hard...the author makes sure of that.
The only problem with this book is that it makes me crave fried chicken, sweet tea, buttery grits, fried okra, fried tomatoes, creamed corn, cobbler, etc.etc.etc...

Finished in a little over a day. Laughed multiple times throughout the read. Many heartwarming, loving moments. Visually beautiful descriptions of cities and life in different decades. Brought to tears in the last few pages. Aside from the minor date continuities, this novel was perfect to me. I wish I could read it for the first time again. My heart feels full.
4 stars
This book was awfully comforting to read. I loved how blunt it was and how it felt like my grandma was the one telling me this story.
Historical fiction has became a genre I've been reading a lot lately, no questions asked. I love historical fiction.
I've been in a reading slump along with school checkpoint to finish all my homework for yesterday.
Thank you pookie for telling me to read this book, I will now watch the movie now

Aggiungete sale e pepe a piacere. Versate sui pomodori e servite bollente. Il meglio che c'è."

I really don't know why I haven't read this before. I remember when it was first published back in the eighties and something stopped me reading it then. And on reflection I think it was because I suspected it would be a little too fluffy for my taste.
Forty odd years later I can say that it is a little too fluffy for my taste but I enjoyed reading it. I am also rather glad I read it aged 59 and not aged 24 I would not have understood Evelyn at that age. I might have thought I did, but I would have been mistaken. I still find it hard to believe that the relationship between Ruth and Idgy would have been so universally accepted but as a compelling tale it is an easy read.

Sharp and wry writing, an expansive and eclectic cast of characters--classic Southern lit. The narrator captured the tone expertly--worth listening to or reading. I'd say 4.5 stars for some uncomfortable cultural content, but for a book written by a white woman in the 80s, it's more progressive than I expected. SO much fun.
