I absolutely love the Buffy the Vampire Slayer show so I was beyond excited to discover that High School is Hell perfectly nails the tone and character voices. The plot diverges from the show but feels true to its roots. It was really great to see what Buffy and the Scoobies would look like as teenagers in the 2010s. I can't wait to read the next installment, particularly in light of the huge cliffhanger this ended with.

I love this way of rebooting Buffy! I don't want a new show because the original is pure perfection, but reimagining it as a modern day comic is awesome. I love the changes made to the characters and the links to the broader verse, and I really REALLY love that all of them *look* like the actors who played them. :')
SO. MUCH. NOSTALGIA.

Love to see more of Faith and I am enjoying the art. I am on the fence on this series though. I liked it, but it doesn't hold the razzle dazzle of the dark horse comics. I stopped reading the Boom BTVS run so I'm hesitant to lean into this one... we'll see where it goes.

Okay, not sure I'll continue. Honestly, the cover gallery was my favorite part.

I really like that the characters are still the original cast. Things have switched up in Sunnydale in this current retelling of Buffy but I'm willing to see where they take us. I am not used to the comic book format of it being so short and me wanting more- so ... this will be interesting.

My Thoughts On: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1
1. I like that this issue begins with Buffy working a shitty, fast-food job. What says slayer trying to be an ordinary teenager more than working at a chain named Tuna Verse. Also, is this a popular chain in Sunnydale? If so, why?
2. Okay, new comic, new art, I get that, but why is the vamp who attacks Willow so monster-like? Is it supposed to be particularly old? Because most vampires are just people with vamp face.
3. I like the style updates, particularly Willow's goth-punk aesthetic and Buffy's edgier look, but I also love that Giles is still rocking three piece suits.
4. No matter the decade, Buffy will initially struggle with Giles over his expectations and how he doesn't understand how hard it is to be a slayer. Giles's sad look when Buffy stormed off hurt me a little. If we don't get some good Dad Giles moments in this series, I will be disappointed.
5. Buffy reading comic books? YES. Buffy criticizing comic books for their unrealistic portrayals of fights and punching? Even better,
6. Poor Buffy, always feeling isolated. This line broke my heart: "I'm just so exhausted. When am I going to have some time to find what I'm about? Like, when am I going to know what I want to do with my life? Not just doing what everyone says I'm supposed to do."
7. One of the best decisions of this issue is to bring in Anya from the beginning. I'm curious to see where they go with her, but I think this is a great way to relaunch this series with some of the most beloved Buffy characters from the beginning.
8. WILLOW HAS A GIRLFRIEND FROM THE BEGINNING. WHO IS WILLOW'S GIRLFRIEND? IS IT TARA? DO WE GET TARA FROM THE BEGINNING? Also, Willow calling Giles Buffy's librarian dad? Perfect.
9. DRUSILLA IS OUR BIG BAD, HELL YEAH! A showdown between Drusilla and Anya, two character I don't think ever met in canon Buffy before, is all I really want.
10. As a Buffy fan, I think this rebooted comic book series is going to be fun. We'll have to wait and see how this series handles certain Buffy plotlines, but I have hope it will be good based on the first issue.

I could go on and on about this but I'll keep it short.
This was incredible. As a die hard buffy fan I was a bit sceptical about this but I'm addicted. Taking the core of the show (the characters, relationships,) and throwing it into the modern world from the beginning was a genius move. This was such a fun read from start to finish. Bold moves throughout. The characters were true to their tv counterparts and I highly enjoyed the fact that there are characters in it that we don't meet till later seasons. Like Anya. And how Jenny Calender is already Giles girlfriend. Also the fact that willow is openly gay in high school is brilliant.
I can't fault this in anyway. It's a brilliant rework and a joyful experience and I look forward to seeing where this takes us!
