Laurie Frankel's writing is the most humane and wonderful thing. I have felt so cared for as a reader. All of her writing is a lesson in understanding, empathy, and what we should aspire to as humans. As always, I laugh and cry and fall in love with all of her characters.

Very slow to start, could have been a 100 pages shorter. I kept forgetting the girls were 16 and not 12. The ending seemed a little rushed.

I started out absolutely loving this book - the concept, the characters, the writing - and then it slowed wayyyyy down in the middle, but I still wanted to know where the story was going, so I kept with it. It picked up the pace a bit near the end, but even the exciting parts were slowed down by the writing - huge, paragraph-long sentences and so much introspection from teenage girls - and the ending was maybe hypothetical? I understand this type of writing and story, with a focus on the characters and their differences and their struggles, but I wanted a tighter, more fast-paced story with this concept. It was almost a mystery, kind of, and allllllllmost magical realism, or at least just sliiiiiightly outside the realm of real, believable life, and I wanted it to lean more into that. Still a good story, just not as good as I thought it was going to be from the beginning of the book.
