I am so happy to have found this author, first with “This Is Always How It Is” and now “One Two Three.” Frankel’s characters are unique and alive in ways that jump off the page. Beloved Mitchel triplets who live in a small town fraught with the dramatic aftermath of chemical pollution twenty some years before. Mab (one) carries her own burden of being the “normal” one. Monday (two) who took all the books from the library that weren’t sold off upon its closing and keeps in various areas, all through the house. She is able to find the book you need which is not usually the one you ask for. She is beautifully unique and endearing. Mirabel (three) is confined to a chair unable to move but for a perfectly able hand. She is intelligent, insightful, kind, caring, and beloved by the town of Bourne. The heroines of this story are different than your normal heroes, as are the villains. The gray area is wide and the story is engaging from the first page to the last.

There's so much I want to say about this book. The town of Bourne is such a character itself. Frankel takes an issue of and entire town ruined, poisoned, destroyed by a chemical plant dumping into a river. She writes three distinct characters, including those with neurodivergent characteristics and an a speech aid. An analog to this book would be INDIGO by Alice Hoffman. I wish I know someone who had read both these books (who wasn't a 7th grade student) who I could talk to about this! This had been my favorite book so far this month.

Interesting premise, but sometimes the quirkiness/cutsiness of the main characters was a little overwhelming.

There is such depth in Frankel’s characters: Mab, who is smart and fallible; Monday, who is on the spectrum and hilarious; and Miribel, who is unable to move much or speak. The plot all tied together nicely. Nothing about this was shocking and everything was well-written. I was just kind of bored and slugged through it a bit. Still much different than what I normally read so I enjoyed that!
