My book club read this one months ago and I had to shelve it because I couldn’t find the time to sit down and dig in. Last week I picked it up again, after my friends’ rave reviews, and I’m so glad I did!! This is the second book I’ve read by Frankel and I think it’s safe to say she’s now one of my favourite authors, because I gave both books 5 stars without hesitation.

I think anyone who has worked with kids or experienced adversity in childhood would particularly enjoy this one. It’s a story told from the perspectives of three young sisters who fight to defend their town against a powerful and morally corrupt family. Every time I had to put the book down, I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen next. It left me contemplating similar real-life experiences faced by communities today, and I felt angry and hopeful and inspired all at once.

The audiobook for this is wonderful. The story feels slow in the beginning, but it’s a great book.

This was a great read. I loved how well fleshed out the characters were and I loved each of them individually for their own specific reasons. I highly recommend the audiobook as each sister is narrated distinctly which really added to the story and I loved it.
