This book is not for the white allies hoping for a feel good story. This book is about the harsh, painful, racist truth of being undocumented in America and the ways the American  “justice” system tears people and communities apart.

This book is a mix of deeply personal fears and experiences, narrative reporting, and community building as a radical act of self-preservation and existence.

This book is soooo informative and beautiful. also heartbreakingly sad. this is a must read, especially for people who don’t understand the full extent of the daily hardships immigrants face just to be in America. It’s horrible and heartbreaking.

Using this for my book club and I look forward to the potential discussions. The publisher describes this book as weaving "memoir with reportage, ceative ethnography, and elements of fiction such as magical realism." I couldn't describe the genre(s) any better. I loved the author's voice. I learned a lot and I think she achieved her goal of writing about undocumented immigrants in a way never done before.
