These just keep getting longer, better, and more epic. Is the end game finally being set in motion?

This book, more than any of the others, highlights the world building that Butcher participates in. He is a master of it, linking together prior books in ways that catches you off-guard. Lovely. Emotional. Well done.

We're all in this south-bound hand basket together.

I'm never in a rush to read this series. And I'm always surprised that I enjoy them. I'm in it for the Marsters voice, even though I've started listening to audiobooks at 1.5 speed (your brain adjusts pretty quickly).

I didn't much care for this one at the start. Harry has gotten himself into yet another impossible to escape situation, being the Winter Knight to a crazy evil fairy queen. Yada yada yada, now we're just supposed to wait around and see how long it takes him to get out of it, like he always does.

And in the meantime, 18 different apocalypses* are happening all at once, and he's the only one who can do anything about them. So, you know. That's all going to be taken care of in this book while setting up the apocalypses that will occur in book 15.

I really don't understand why I like these books so much. That sounds AWFUL. These are great books, they really are. They're so far removed from my genre preference, there's so much damsel-in-distress saving and too many pinches of misogyny (delicate pinches, but they're there). But I really, really do enjoy these books.

I did not see the little twists at the end coming. I saw quite clearly what was going on with the Nemesis, but the Winter and Summer ladies, I did not. Major kudos on that front, I am very interested in seeing how that plays out. Very interesting to see that the events of these books has been linked in this way, almost makes me want to do a series re-read. Maybe I will once I get to the last published book.

I probably won't, but it's a fun idea.

Very good. Looking forward to the next book. 2019, maybe.

Oh, almost forgot. Thank you, Butcher, for the Firefly reference. And thank you, James, for the voice of Toot-Toot and the other fairies. We got massive doses of all the fairy voices and that never. gets. old.

* I pronounce that with the end sounding like elipses, if anyone's curious.

Oh yes.

OH YES!

Loved it.

It's a Dresden Files Book, and - in particular - it's a post Changes Dresden Files Book, which means that it was bound to make me love it. And love it I did.

Not going into spoilers (If I do, they'll be marked) or really going to describe it - if you're reading this review for the 14th book in a series, you probably already know what Dresden's all about, but here's a bullet point list of things that I particularly loved.

- Jim Butcher is amazing at writing Fae, and his Fae are some of my favourite aspects of the series. Since this book in particular is REALLY dealing with Fae, we get a lot of his fantastic worldbuilding on full display here.

- A lot of the "bigger picture" parts of the series are finally revealed here, and it was great seeing some the plot points of the past being linked to the current state of affairs in the series. It really makes everything feel more connected than it already was.

- Call backs to Summer Knight, which is one of my personal favourite Dresden books that I really need to reread again.

- One of my favourite things to read is a character fighting duality within themselves, facing a darker nature that they need to repress. It's one of the reasons why I really love Thomas as a character - his inner conflict is fantastic. In Cold Days, we get to see that but with Harry, fighting against the Winter within him, and Jim Butcher does an amazing job with Harry's internal struggle.

-
Spoiler On the topic of Thomas, his sibling dynamic with Harry is just plain wonderful. They really feel like brothers, and it's refreshing to see a sibling relationship done so well.

- Demonreach is freaking cool, and an amazing concept that I'm happy to see getting explored further.

- The writing, as always, was top notch. I often read on my break at work, and it's so hard to not look like a maniac grinning at a book when I'm reading something like Dresden.

Anyway, could go on gushing, but I don't want to make this too long. Another awesome entry into one of my favourite series, and I look forward to seeing where it takes me next.

This book was non-stop: no lags, no filler - just balls to the wall action the whole entire time it felt like. Really enjoyed it. If you haven't started this series, really should consider it!

I'm a bit torn on this one. Story-wise, I loved it. But man am I getting tired of the horny descriptions of every female character. This book especially seemed to have them in particular abundance.
