I feel like this is maybe the worst written book in the New Prophecy series so far but its also my second favorite? Maybe it's because the clans are settled back into the forest and we are back to border disputes and political intrigue.

I love the stuff about Onewhisker being an illegitimate replacement to Tallstar and this being the cause of conflict in the book. I think this is a good basis for the skirmish that ends the book. The scene where Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost share a dream with Tigerstar is also quite fun.

There is soooooo much soapy drama in this book. Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight are in a couple of fights this whole book and its a lot. I don't mind the drama but it starts for no reason and continues to not be justified. Also, all the heavy-fisted writing around Hawkfrost being a bad dude is oversaturated in this book and it's not a surprise at all when he leads a rebellion against Onewhisker.

I CANNOT believe at the end of this book Firstar and Onewhisker let Hawkfrost off the hook. The dude started a rebellion against a clan that wasn't his and then just JK'ed it and everyone thought it was fine. Unbelievable.

I guess this trashing writing and inconsistent character arcs are why I love this series.

This is basically just 350 pages of the four clans settling and discussion/ fighting over territory borders. And I absolutely loved it. I felt like this book was more character driven than the others (I mean all the WC books are very much character driven, but this was just more than others) I only really felt like we got to know the characters by the end of the second book burly now I feel like I can really say that I feel home with the new characters, though the OG’s are still very much my favorites.

So this book was told from Brambleclaw and Leafpaw’s (now Leafpool) pov. I think this book really added some conflict and traits to Brambleclaws character. I mean, I never thought he was boring just a bit more flat than the other characters. I kinda felt like they made his whole personality being Tigerstars son in the other books. But this one I think added something different to his character. First of all his fight with Squirrelflight. Like it’s clear for everyone to see that he likes her, and she him. But they both believe they can’t be together. Squirrelflight because she thinks, she will always be second to Brambleclaw and that he would choose Hawkfrost (his half brother) over her. And Brambleclaw thinks it’s because she doesn’t completely trust him because he’s trying to spend more time with his brother and because he still thinks the others doesn’t trust him because of his father.
One of my favorite part of the book was seeing Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost. I mean first of all Hawkfrost is a very confusing but interesting character. Either he is really trying to be good and to be more friendly towards Brambleclaw, or he is a big manipulative liar just like his father. (I’m leaning more to the last one, but you never know) I kinda feel like Hawkfrost is brainwashing Brambleclaw to be on his side, because Brambleclaw for the first time finally found someone that gets him and feels just like him. He wants a friendship with his brother, because he finally found something who he relates to and who doesn’t judge him for his father. (I mean his sister Tawnypelt too but since she’s in Shadowclan it isn’t as hard for her)
And I don’t know maybe Hawkfrost feels the same way, he did save Brambleclaws life. Right now I’m very unsure of his intentions, though I’m pretty sure they’re not good. Honestly I think Hawkfrost would make an amazing villain. Like ofc I want him to be good and realize he doesn’t have to turn out like his dad, because I really feel like he has potential to be a good warrior/deputy. But we’ll see.

Then there’s Leafpool and Crowfeather, like I want them to get together so bad! But also like they had spoken together like four or five times, and none of the times had Crowfeather been friendly towards Leafpool. But then he saves her life and suddenly he’s declaring his love for her

I'll say something controversial yet brave: Mudclaw was wronged and any attempt to convince me otherwise will fall on deaf ears
