I keep going back and forth on my rating for this, and I'm still not sure if I want to rank it as three or four stars. I wish I could say three and-a-half, but there are no halves on Goodreads.
I think what weighed this book down for me was all the relationship angst between Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight. She was being ridiculously unfair to him about his half-brother, basically judging Hawkfrost because he was ambitious and cared about his Clan. He didn't really do anything remotely sinister until the end, so her saying "choose me or him" to Brambleclaw was pretty awful. As he pointed out over and over, they were kin, and there was nothing wrong with wanting to get to know his half-brother.
There was a lot of down time of the Clans getting to know their new territory, but I honestly didn't mind. I was still interested in what would happen next, which I think is a point in the book's favor. It was a little annoying when the cats complained to Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight about their new home, as if everything should magically be prepared for them. You are all adults; if you want moss or a more comfortable place to sleep, take care of it yourselves! And Crowfeather was being very back-and-forth on being nasty to the other Clan cats. I get he's having confusion over his feelings, but it still made me want to smack him. It was actually a little odd how quickly most of the cats went back to the old Clan divides, as if their journey as one meant nothing.
There were some moments that made me cry, like when Leafpool got to meet with StarClan. The ending was a little anticlimactic, but in an odd way I didn't mind that, either. The build-up could've been a little less intense, though. The warning Leafpool got warned of more blood, so either this encounter was being over-hyped or there's more to come later. I would still like some warrior code answers, like why can't Leafpool have kits? And what does not having kits have to do with not being in love? I know they're animals but they're anthropomorphic, and two people can be in love and be together without having kids together.
I'm very interested on what happens next. I'm personally on the fence with Hawkfrost as well because the narrative hasn't shown him as being worth all the antagonism he's getting. We'll see what happens!

This is my favourite book from The New Prophecy so far, even if Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight’s arguments were frustrating! I’m so happy with Leafpool’s name, and I feel so bad for Onewhisker because it’s not his fault that Tallstar made him deputy 🥲
