This was simple, fun and cute collection of comic episodes.
The comic follows the daily life of Pen, a remarkable little penguin who lives with his owner, Hayakawa. Hayakawa is lazy, unappreciative, and messy, and seems completely oblivious to how brilliant his little roommate is.
Pen performs a variety of amazing feats in an effort to care for and please his owner, often without acknowledgement, but always with hilarious results! He does find adoration in Hayakawa's friends and the wider community though.
The art is simple and fitting for this Japanese humour. This is definitely one for foodies as well. However for me, I found Hayakawa more annoying than funny.
I also didn't feel this was varied and interesting enough to sit and read all in one go at lunch time. I would be more inclined to read a little bit here and there going forward.

I received a free digital ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
Penguin and House by Akiho Ieda is a sweet slice of life manga following a nurturing ‘house penguin’ and his pampered owner. Its really fun, cozy read with cute illustrations. The only downside is you may end up feeling sorry for the put upon little penguin despite how much he seems to enjoy caring for his roommate!

Pen-chan has melted my heart! I’m a sucker for light-hearted slice-of-life manga, and this one is no exception. Hayakawa owns a little penguin who is an exemplary chef and excels at most things he tries, but somehow Hayakawa is the only person not to notice it. I like the humour and secondary characters, they add a layer to the story that makes it more charming. Definitely give it a try if you need a smile!
Thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the ARC.

Essentially the same as Masterful Cat except terrible because the guy doesn't appreciate his pet at all. This volume went back and forth between dull and upsetting. I don't think the penguin is cute, so there's no appeal at all.
The smallest member of the household spotted this manga in a bookstore and I bought it for them on a whim. Their review: "Cute, funny, cool - 10 out of 5 stars". Child has not stopped talking about this penguin since and insisted that I read the manga too.
This is a slice-of-life comic ... but with a silent, talented penguin called Pen and its almost-certainly-autistic human called Hayakawa. If you want to know the gentle chaos of living with a neurodivergent person, this funny comic gives you an idea of what it can be like (apologies and respect to anyone who has ever shared a roof with me).
Although the text does not identify Hayakawa as autistic, I feel the need to point this out because:
1) as a person from a family with neurodivergent people in it, I saw us in Hayakawa over and over again (there were multiple points where I thought, "oh yes family member X reacts like that" and "family member Y has definitely done that"); and
2) multiple reviewers have expressed frustration at Hayakawa's actions, suggesting he is a thoughtless jerk, but you shouldn't assume you understand a person's motivations from their actions alone (this nonsense is why neurodivergent people feel the need to overexplain everything so neurotypical people stop misunderstanding us).
Yes, Pen is a super-cute and impressively skilled penguin ... but Pen needs to read the room before putting in a wild amount of effort. Pen's efforts are gifts, not debts that Hayakawa owes Pen. Readers, let Hayakawa eat pancakes when he wants pancakes without giving him stink eye, darn it!
